[13:10:41] --- servus is now known as servusZzz
[20:03:07] <Dominus> hey ho
[20:03:09] <Dominus> welcome a very pissed off Dominus
[20:03:25] <Dominus> my 36 GB hd went poof today
[20:10:13] <Dominus> luckily I have the most important data backed up on my laptop as well and did burn some of the stuff from that hd today.
[20:10:27] <DarkeZzz> Umm... ouch. You have my sympathies. Death of a HDD is not much fun.
[20:10:34] <Dominus> but that still leaves me 6 GB short of stuff I downloaded via modem
[20:12:26] * DarkeZzz is currently trying the 'replace mobo+cpu+ram game', his unstable windows computer was finally fried the other night due to an impressive power surge, but at least it's not much of a fuss as hdd replacement.
[20:13:52] <Dominus> I'm asking a friend of a friend if he can get to my data... the hd still shows when my scsi controller "boots" but it cannot initialize it correctly and it sounds like the hd is not properly spinning up (I hear it spin up, spin down)
[20:14:09] <Dominus> ouch as well
[20:15:47] <DarkeZzz> Chuck the hdd in an anti-static bag and drop it in the freezer for a while, then pull it out and let it thaw a little and try it again. For such a weird procedure, this has fixed a couple of friends drives long enough to grab the most important stuff off them. *grin*
[20:16:18] <Dominus> sounds interesting
[20:16:32] <Dominus> into the deep freezer or just the refrigerator
[20:16:33] <Dominus> ?
[20:16:43] <DarkeZzz> Freezer I believe.
[20:16:53] <DarkeZzz> s/Freezer/Deep freezer/
[20:17:17] <Dominus> ok
[20:17:24] <Dominus> this will be interesting
[20:18:05] <DarkeZzz> It has some sense of logic, since mental contracts when it gets cold, so it might pull parts back into places that they've slipped out of. And I can't see much of a 'worst case', after all the drive's already dead. *grin*
[20:18:30] <Dominus> yep
[20:18:59] <DarkeZzz> You just need to make sure it's suitably warmed up before trying to power it up again. Since bits can shatter/warp if they go from cold to hot just a little *too* quickly. *grin*
[20:19:15] <Dominus> he he
[20:20:03] <DarkeZzz> Though I was told they dropped it straight into their computers, so... *grin* I myself wouldn't do such, unless it failed the first time.
[20:20:55] <Dominus> I'm just grateful I traveled back home over the weekend - the reason I backed up my personal data like all my digital photos onto my laptop
[20:21:07] * DarkeZzz nodnods.
[20:21:42] <Dominus> I've setup my scsi stuff so I just need to open the case, pull some wires out and hook the drive up
[20:22:18] <Dominus> after this my scsi stuff will get terminated...
[20:22:51] <Dominus> I'm delving into google to learn some more of the deep freeze method :-)
[20:22:58] <DarkeZzz> Baaaad Dominus! Into the punilty box with you! *grin*
[20:23:13] <DarkeZzz> Heh. Find anything interesting?
[20:23:25] * Dominus needs to look up punility now
[20:23:45] <DarkeZzz> It's a... err... pun. *grin*
[20:24:00] <DarkeZzz> On 'penality'. *grin*
[20:24:24] <DarkeZzz> I'm guessing the scsi 'termiated' comment was an accidental pun? *grin*
[20:24:49] <Dominus> hitachi data recovery policy (they take on ibm drives): The link provides a list of vendors offering data recovery services:
[20:24:50] <Dominus> http://www.google.com/search?q=data+recovery+disk
[20:24:57] <Dominus> he he
[20:25:02] <Dominus> yes accidental
[20:25:51] <DarkeZzz> Last time I checked most data recovery services were a *little* out of the price range for most people. *grin*
[20:26:04] <Dominus> yes, indeed
[20:26:23] <Dominus> more something for big companies that really need these data
[20:27:00] <DarkeZzz> Yup.
[20:27:45] <Dominus> freeze method: http://www.tek-tips.com/gviewthread.cfm/lev2/7/lev3/50/pid/528/qid/398225
[20:35:20] <DarkeZzz> One against, multiple people supporting it. That and there's nothing much else you can do with a dead drive too, doesn't hinder the case. *grin*
[20:36:22] <Dominus> I'm reading the next forum there (link is at the bottom of the link above) and they recommend to try twisting the drive a bit. I'll try that first and then go on to freezing
[20:51:43] <Dominus> ok, that's it
[20:51:57] <Dominus> I'm going to twist it now and hook it up again.
[20:52:06] <Dominus> will tell you how it went...
[20:52:08] <Dominus> bye
[20:52:10] <wjp> hi
[20:52:13] <wjp> bye :-)
[20:52:46] <wjp> ugh, losing a HD is bad :-(
[20:56:35] <DarkeZzz> Yup.
[21:10:18] <wjp> hi Max
