[01:39:03] --- DominusExult is now known as Dominus
[05:51:42] <Mickmane> Morning. :)
[07:30:44] <Dominus> hi Mickmane, can you elaborate what you mean?
[07:31:51] <Dominus> if you mean a specific spot in the bags or backpack, then it doesn't save that. bags and backpacks without extra pockets are mixing their stuff all the time :)
[07:52:16] <Mickmane> I mean the thing with the paperdoll on it.
[07:52:52] <Mickmane> I press i, move the inventory to the top right corner, hit the tick or esc (not sure if esc worked, actually), hit i again, and the thing with the paperdoll is in a different spot.
[07:53:00] <Mickmane> Sorry for delay, was afk.
[07:53:32] <Mickmane> I also can't get the music to sound right (but at least the sounds seem good now. :) )
[07:54:42] <Mickmane> I look at exult every few years for a while now, but end up playing on DosBox because it's not the way I am used to. I'd soo like the keyring!
[07:55:13] <Mickmane> (I dig out Ultima 7 every few years, the one and only RPG for me. :) )
[07:56:22] <Mickmane> (Would it be ok to ping you, Dominus? Sometimes people don't want that, especially those with an @ :) )
[07:57:30] <Dominus> I'm ok with that :)
[07:57:48] <Mickmane> Great, thanks. :)
[07:58:06] <Dominus> you just drag and drop the stuff where you want it to be. and once it is there you close the paperdoll via ESC and it should remain there :)
[07:58:17] <Mickmane> It doesn't for me, what am I doing wrong?
[07:58:41] <Mickmane> It never did, that was one thing that drove me back to dosbox, plus the sound of hitting the tick wasn't right (it is now).
[07:58:41] <Dominus> or do you mena the location of the whole paperdoll on the screen?
[07:58:48] <Mickmane> yes.
[07:59:16] <Dominus> ahh, sorry, we never implemented saving those coordinates
[07:59:27] <Mickmane> oh, any chance you'll do that?
[08:00:16] <Mickmane> I mean, add saving the coordinates?
[08:02:18] <Dominus> I might. There is a very old patch for this (since 2005 :)) and I updated that patch in 2014 and wanted input from the other developers but never got it...
[08:02:49] <Mickmane> a patch for exult, or a patch for saving coordinates?
[08:03:40] <Dominus> a patch for exult *BUT* it has one big problem: when you change resolutions it might have saved the paperpoll somewhere you can't see anymore
[08:04:06] <Dominus> and tell me your trouble with the music
[08:04:25] <Mickmane> Can you save relative to the edge, or move it like you move the menu when resolution was changed?
[08:05:01] <Mickmane> it doesn't sound like I'm used to. For a first test I went to the fellowship house in Trinsic, and went through all setting combos, and none sound quite right
[08:05:20] <Mickmane> How hard would it be for me to record the sounds I'm used to and use them in the game?
[08:06:19] <Dominus> so, you mean music NOT sound effects?
[08:06:42] <Mickmane> especially the drum, TAM Tam tam tam sounds metallic or more like wind instrument instead of that powerful sound I know.
[08:06:43] <Mickmane> yes
[08:06:56] <Dominus> there are three different music ways:
[08:06:59] <Mickmane> sound effects as far as I've gotten are ok now (used to be odd)
[08:07:29] <Dominus> 1. the FMOpl emulator, emulating how the soundbalster setting of the original sounded
[08:07:47] <Dominus> 2. digital music -> recording of the MT32 playback
[08:07:55] <Mickmane> it doesn't sound like the original sound blaster (I had sound blaster, and use sound blaster setting in DosBox, and there it sounds right)
[08:08:35] <Dominus> 3. Midi and that's the problematic one as it uses the Windows Midid device and that is likely to be wrong but often can be enhanced by soundfonts etc
[08:09:16] <Mickmane> what's soundfonts, and can I get them somewehre? (should I go looking for them?)
[08:09:19] <Dominus> if you record the songs and replace the appropriate one from the digital music pack then you can use that
[08:09:49] <Mickmane> Oh! I'll go look at what the ones in the music pack sound and see about recording them with audacity (I guess should work)
[08:09:52] <Mickmane> thanks! :))
[08:10:01] <Dominus> Mickmane: I need to look into how that stuff works on Windows, I switched away from that some time ago, so I'm not sure
[08:10:28] <Mickmane> windoze 7 home, btw, 64 bit.
[08:10:35] <Dominus> the digital music files are in the music subfolder of the data folder.
[08:11:12] <Mickmane> thanks, I tend to find my way around directories ok. :) (used DOS and OS/2 up until 2009, when I moved and got broadband)
[08:11:38] <Mickmane> It's great that you hang around and care, btw. Thank you very much! :)
[08:17:09] <Mickmane> I loaded the music folder into foobar2000 to have a listen to the songs, and now wonder if I find out how to adjust one to sound right, I can adjust all the same way. Think that's possible with audacity for example?
[08:18:43] <Mickmane> need to go afk for a bit
[08:19:00] <Dominus> you probably need to record the music from the original and then overwrite the original ogg file
[08:30:03] <Mickmane> Ok.
[08:32:53] <Dominus> I think, listening to it and U7 via Dosbox, that our FMOpl emulation is more like the Adlib setting of the original
[08:35:32] <Mickmane> Hm, didn't Adlib have something to do with sound blaster? Been so long... :)
[08:43:55] <Dominus> yes, but another chip, I think. I can never keep that in mind :)
[08:44:11] <Mickmane> I was never good with names for things either. :)
[10:28:23] <Mickmane> Hm, I spent some time trying to find the right music tracks online, no luck so far. I once, ages ago, got stones and the kilrathy song for my phone somewhere (to listen to while walking somewhere), and I'm pretty sure I found the correct ones. Hm.
[10:42:11] <Mickmane> Found the files on my harddrive, but they aren't all correct either.
[10:42:51] <Dominus> correct is a pretty subjective matter, btw.
[10:43:29] <Dominus> most correct is the MT32 soundtrack, as this device doesn't change
[10:43:58] <Dominus> but everything else, Adlib, Soundblaster etc. are subject to different chips. similar but different in some ways
[10:45:16] <Mickmane> Oh, of course it's completely subjective, to me correct is what it sounded like with soundblaster (sounds better too, than the alternatives I find)
[10:45:47] <Dominus> I'll have the player gump position save in code up pretty soon, so next snapshot should have it (if Kirben, who does the snapshots, delivers :))
[10:46:02] <Dominus> even Soundblasters were different :)
[10:48:19] <Mickmane> heh
[10:48:48] <Mickmane> sorry, had to go and investigate weird smell (like snuffed candle), sticking my nose into the stairwell outside my flat it seems to be some weird food.
[10:49:35] <Mickmane> guess I'll mop the kitchen when the smell has disipated. So I keep on wondering how I save myself recording every song. :)
[10:49:44] <Mickmane> Btw, thanks much for the gump coordinates! :)
[10:50:21] <Dominus> :) Thanks for reminding me of this again
[10:50:24] <Mickmane> What's the rough time it takes Kirben to do snapshots?
[10:50:36] <Mickmane> You're welcome. :) (Why again?)
[10:50:51] <Dominus> btw. it's only going to save it during gameplay. on next startup it's going to be random on first opening the gumps again
[10:51:06] <Mickmane> Oh, shame. Original remembered it properly
[10:51:41] <Mickmane> hey, I'd go with putting it in the top right corner every time, that's where I put them. :)
[10:51:57] <Mickmane> (all of them, on top of each other)
[10:52:58] <Mickmane> btw, what happens to the skeleton key that works as an unbreakable lockpick (from some tiny island left of the mainland), is that added to the keyring or staying separate?
[10:53:55] <Dominus> Again: because 'I looked at the patch back in 2005 but back then I was only writing the documentation. Then someone brought it up in 2014 and I refactored the patch to work again and asked for input by the other devs. But that was ignored. So now I'm just comitting!!!!
[10:54:19] <Mickmane> oh, right. Coulud be I turned up in 2014 and mentioned it. :)
[10:54:28] <Mickmane> Thanks again! :)
[10:54:33] <Dominus> the skeleton key is just a key, so if you add it, it will be on the keyting
[10:54:55] <Mickmane> and properly open all lockpick-able chests and doors?
[10:56:09] <Mickmane> Btw, another reason I want to use exult is that it's easier for me to record the game with. I want to record it for a friend. Gifted it to him on gog a while ago, when he finally had a look he found the interface too awkward (used to modern games), but he's interested, so I want to play and record it for him.
[10:56:26] <Mickmane> might as well use what's supposed to be the one and only correct sound, even if it sounds weird to me. :)
[10:57:53] <Mickmane> MT32 you said, I'll have a listen. :) (Spent yesterday with Exult and OBS figuring out the correct settings. So that's taken care of.)
[10:58:30] <Dominus> keyring/Skeleton key - it should work , but honestly, I haven't tested this aspect. I never found time to play through with the keyring patch
[10:58:50] <Dominus> MT32-> use the digital music and this is a very correct recording
[10:58:51] <Mickmane> I'll let you know then :)
[10:59:08] <Mickmane> with midi driver disabled I assume?`
[10:59:30] <Dominus> gump position save is comitted. Kirben is Australian, who knows when he does that
[10:59:44] <Dominus> "Digital music" enabled will take precedent over any midi configuration
[10:59:45] <Mickmane> sounds ok btw, I just miss the powerfull BAM from the drums in the fellowship tune.
[11:00:03] <Mickmane> ah, right, I noticed that yesterday, but my memory is older than the game!
[11:00:27] <Mickmane> With 'when' I mean, soon, within the week, maybe month, year,... :)
[11:01:28] <Mickmane> Hm, with that all taken care of, I can go back to read the documentation (I searched it for the bits I mentioned here before bugging you, but there's so much interesting stuff I haven't looked at yet).
[11:01:31] <Dominus> probably today or tomorrow
[11:01:37] <Mickmane> Oh, that's super cool! :)
[11:01:37] <Dominus> I'm off for lunch :)
[11:01:42] <Mickmane> see you :)
[11:53:10] <Mickmane> documentation: "<disable_fades> **"no" enables fading between different menu points
[11:53:10] <Mickmane> no
[11:53:10] <Mickmane> </disable_fades>"
[11:53:27] <Mickmane> disables or enables? :)
[12:05:32] <Mickmane> "Also not that in contrast to Mac OS X and " typo: also 'note', not 'not'. :)
[12:08:07] <Mickmane> Hm, I'm a bit confused, can I not change the savegame path to something that isn't buried on C:?
[12:10:04] <Mickmane> ah, portable switch! :)
[12:11:05] <Dominus> even without the portable switch you can set the savegame location to whatever you want
[12:11:26] <Mickmane> I think I prefer the config in the exult dir, too, anyway
[12:12:47] <Dominus> disable_fades is a bit of stupid naming :)
[12:14:00] <Mickmane> maybe adjust the explanation to what it does anyway? :)
[12:18:14] <Mickmane> stderr.txt says "Warning, trailing slash in path: "<BLACKGATE_STATIC>\"
[12:18:14] <Mickmane> Warning, trailing slash in path: "<SERPENTISLE_STATIC>\"
[12:18:15] <Mickmane> SDL Reports 640x400 16 bpp and 32 bpp windowed surfaces are not OK. Windowed scalers may not work properly."
[12:18:19] <Mickmane> should I worry?
[12:19:03] <Dominus> no, just warnings and the scalers thing is just a leftover from porting to SDL2 and somehow that doesn't report correctly but works fine
[12:19:11] <Mickmane> ok :)
[12:19:58] <Dominus> there is a new snapshot for Windows up... so... give the gump saving a try :)
[12:20:06] <Mickmane> oh, wow! that's quick
[12:20:12] * Mickmane goes wondering where I got it again...
[12:20:36] <Dominus> http://exult.sourceforge.net/download.php
[12:20:43] <Mickmane> yes, found that. thanks!
[12:21:31] <Mickmane> avast complains about the exultwin32.exe
[12:21:47] <Dominus> kick it
[12:22:05] <Mickmane> wonder how I kick software
[12:22:14] <Dominus> it's a false positive but you can send it to other online scanners to make sure
[12:22:37] <Mickmane> it jus tsays blocked and add an exception, it didn't even say anything about what's supposed to be wrong with it.
[12:22:48] <Mickmane> why did the previous .exe not get me a complaint?
[12:23:43] <Dominus> noidea
[12:29:47] <Mickmane> this is weird, previously when I did joiurney onward it dumped me onto the last save state in the fellowship house, now when I do journey onward it dumps me where I had jumped to the wing commander II spaceship, and exited without saving (just to check music)
[12:30:01] <Mickmane> difference is now using portable, and I copied the savegames to the exult dir
[12:31:04] <Mickmane> yay it puts the gump thing into the corner I put it, thanks!
[12:31:52] <Mickmane> that's so quick, I'm not even done with the domentation yet!
[12:34:59] <Dominus> savegame oddities: the journey onward/quicksave is stored in the gamedat folder
[12:35:15] <Mickmane> How do I turn the hackmover on, I have cheats enabled (just to mess around a bit before starting a proper char) but apart from F3 map teleport I forgot what to do
[12:35:35] <Dominus> the contents of that (gamedat folder) is probably different
[12:35:44] <Dominus> ctrl-h
[12:36:10] <Mickmane> but the thing it loaded was from earlier today, before I copied the save folders to the exult dir
[12:36:37] <Mickmane> I had been wondering why journey onward hadn't loaded the spaceship location before, but figured I guess I have to save.
[12:37:32] <Mickmane> thanks for the cheat llist :)
[12:40:59] <Mickmane> Hm, I moved furniture around, now the TV's in front of the print out of the runes (taped to the wall), must move that.
[12:45:32] <Mickmane> is there a chat for U7 enthusiasts, or is it ok if I happily ramble on here?
[12:48:49] <Mickmane> Hm, the waves are a bit noisy
[12:49:41] <Dominus> you can ramble here, but no one is listening :)
[12:50:50] <Mickmane> aw
[12:50:55] <Mickmane> is there a chat somewhere?
[12:51:07] <Dominus> not that I know of.
[12:51:14] <Mickmane> btw, can I turn down the volume of the waves and whatever else uses the same volume setting?
[12:51:36] <Dominus> on Facebook in the UDIC group or somewhat in our forum
[12:51:55] <Mickmane> Oh, UDIC, not seen many posts there recently though.
[12:51:58] <Dominus> unfortunately music and sfx are on the same volume
[12:52:09] <Mickmane> oh
[13:10:33] <Dominus> it's something to do whenever someone wants to start contributing to Exult with code
[13:10:54] <Mickmane> What exactly is?
[13:11:14] <Dominus> splitting up volume of sfx and music
[13:11:22] <Mickmane> ah!
[13:13:02] <Dominus> we are extremely understaffed :)
[13:13:13] <Mickmane> Not many enthusiasts left?
[13:13:30] <Dominus> real life swallowed them all
[13:13:41] <Dominus> not many developers left. and I am not really one
[13:13:59] <Dominus> I can do basic stuff but advanced stuff is overy my head
[13:13:59] <Mickmane> Real life tried me and spit me out into early retirement (due to health reasons). If I had half a clue, I'd offer help.
[13:14:52] <Mickmane> All I managed was some savegame editors back on DOS with Quick Basic (not Q-basic, Quick Basic has an inbuilt compiler).
[14:04:18] <Mickmane> Need a nap. See you later. :)
[19:00:44] <Mickmane> Weird, I did journey onward again, and it puts me at the spaceship again, not wherever I was when I exited.
[19:14:33] <Mickmane> documentary of Exult settings typo: "If you compiled Exult ourself " I think it should be yourself
[19:15:39] <lupine> or, better still, thasen
[19:15:57] <Mickmane> Hm?
[19:16:14] <lupine> it's yorkshire for yourself
[19:16:22] <Mickmane> Oh, hehe.
[20:20:45] <Mickmane> wonder if I can get the black borders (due to window bigger than game) just 1 border at one side.
[20:20:51] <Mickmane> to be*
[20:36:47] <Dominus> Mickmane: Exult doesn't autosave. so if you left without saving you are back to where you were before
[20:37:15] <Dominus> stdout will tell you what it uses for the gamedat location
[20:37:47] <Mickmane> I just found the keyboard shortcuts for quick restore and save, I guess I pressed ctrl+s at some point
[20:38:04] <Mickmane> weird though, the original put me where I was when I exited, if I remember right
[20:38:16] <Dominus> no, it didn't
[20:45:19] <Mickmane> ok
[21:59:50] <Mickmane> the seven towers link in the docu leads to some place that says the domain might be for sale
[22:12:38] <Mickmane> Documentation, "known issues" "Stealing and killing innocent NPCs doesn't work yet like it does in the original." Does that mean tehy don't notice me stealing, so I don't have to close the door, or does it mean tehy notice it even when I'm alone in a closed room?`
[22:29:11] <Mickmane> Reading gameplay faq (just curious) and am reminded of the problem in the original that the murder scene in the mining town (minoc?) in BG might vanish if you cross a certain spot on the sea too early. Is that fixed?
[22:29:52] <Mickmane> mind, you can still act as if the murder scene were there, but the mill is clean.
[22:56:08] <Mickmane> Wow, way past bedtime, see you tomorrow. :)
