[11:57:38] --- sbx|afk is now known as sbx
[15:59:16] <Colourless> hi
[16:16:54] <sbx> hello
[16:38:22] <wjp> hi Ryan
[21:03:14] <wjp> hi Fingolfin
[21:03:38] <Fingolfin> hiya
[21:03:48] * Fingolfin just got back from a customer who had a problem with the computer not starting properly anymore...
[21:04:00] <Fingolfin> it's sad when you have to tell somebody that their HD is dead :-/
[21:04:25] <Fingolfin> really strange thing, too: system didn't boot up. customer tried 30-40 times today, and eventually it came up, and run from 15:00 till 20:00
[21:04:26] <Fingolfin> ...
[21:04:53] <wjp> hm, temperature related?
[21:05:25] * wjp had a near-dead HD once that would run for half an hour or so if you let it cool down enough
[21:05:35] <Fingolfin> nope
[21:05:40] <Fingolfin> the motor isn't spinning at all.
[21:05:47] <Fingolfin> my guess is that the driver electronic is broken
[21:06:01] <Fingolfin> essentially, the drive needs a "boost" to start spinning (every motor needs that)
[21:06:27] <Fingolfin> if the electronic which is responsible for that is broken, the HD can't start to spin. If, however, by miracle it starts spinning, it will run just fine like normal
[21:06:31] <wjp> hm, so the data is most likely still intact but getting to it is a bit of a problem?
[21:06:35] <Fingolfin> exactly
[21:06:44] <Fingolfin> a pity I can't foretell the future...
[21:07:01] <Fingolfin> if I were able to to do that, I would have brought an external USB HD, plugged it in, copied the data...
[21:07:44] <Fingolfin> instead of going there, after getting a report which said "We forgot a CD in the drive; when we turned on the machine, it didn't want to start from the HD anymore", which lead me to believe it was a simple problem... so we turned off the machine so I could see the error message...
[21:07:44] <Fingolfin> <sigh>
[21:07:54] <Fingolfin> afterwards, you always know better, right? :-)
[21:08:25] <wjp> yeah...
[21:10:26] <wjp> I've heard some stories about replacing controller boards on HDs, but I have no idea how easy it is to get a new controller
[21:32:23] <Fingolfin> http://www.overclockers.com/tips1035/
[21:38:51] <wjp> hm, I wouldn't feel comfortable at all exposing the platters/heads themselves
[22:24:20] <Fingolfin> neither would I :-) just thought it's an interesting read
[22:27:09] <wjp> it is :-)
[23:02:16] <wjp> I should go too; 'night
[23:02:32] <Baastuul> bai
