Blacksmithing Question

Post by Jesse Broecker »

I've noticed Blacksmithing down't quite work right Blacksmiths aren't pickking up and using their tools They just hammer on their sword blaks with whatever is in hand. I also noticed the smithies in BG arent getting water from the well for the cooling bin. I'm guessing this is something that is already known about. Oh and I'm running win98 with the 1.0 snapshot (9-29-2002). Also just wondering if there are any plans to improve the blacksmighing job?

I haven´t try it yet Jesse, but if it´s as you say it would be a nice idea to implement it on blacksmith´s schedules. I remember how realistic seemed to me blacksmiths´ work on the original Ultima7 and I´d like to see it again. Perhaps after the 1.00 release...

Hm, the blacksmithing schedule should work pretty much like in the original. Using whatever is in their hand sounds like a bug, though.

About the water: do they get water from the well in the original?

Yes, they do WJP; they get water from the well, take it to the cooling bin and fill it, then hammer on the sword and later take the sword to the bin and put it inside in order to cool it so the bin appears empty then. Try it by yourself if you can!

I´ve tried it with Exult 1.0x now and it´s as Jesse said. Perhaps blacksmiths using whatever is in their hand is a bug, but I was thinking about submit it with the "water-from-the-well" issue in feature requests section of the project page. What shall be done? Submit it as a bug? As a feature request? Nothing at all?

Now it´s on Feature Requests as "Blacksmiths´schedule". Thanks DrCode. And thank you too Jesse because it seems that nobody had noticed it before.

-From the #Exult channel:

[18:06:03] did the blacksmith really get water from a well in u7?
[18:06:16] not as far as i know
[18:06:35] I stared at the blacksmith schedule for quite some time when I implemented it
[18:06:44] I really think I would've noticed it back then :-)
[18:09:55] Maybe the schedule is different in BG and SI? i.e. maybe the blacksmith only fetches water in SI?
[18:10:46] * wjp nods; that's possible
[18:13:32] i don't think so

WJP and Colourless, I swear you they do it!! And THREE times in order to fulfill the cooling bin completely again; then they leave the bucket near the cooling bin! Oh, by the way: they use tongs to take the sword pattern. Go and visit Zorn, the blacksmith at Minoc in BG and you´ll see it. About SI I can´t remember but I´ll try it too.

The schedules do work diffrently in BG and SI I've never seen say Standarr in SI get water from the well though Zorn in Minoc in BG did. And I think the smiths grabbing tools from a nearby metal table was a feature in si I never saw it done in BG.

Actually Zorn uses tools (tongs and hammer) from a nearby wooden table. The main problem is staying there looking him to work. Perhaps there are more NPCs in Exult with mistaken-unimplemented schedules (perhaps not); I´ll look for them whenever I can.
