Off Topic: My selfmade Fantasy RPG in Ultima 7-Style

Post by Trevor_Clim »

hi :)

i hope it doesnt matter, that i post this off topic here, otherwise feel free to delete the thread.

Since January 2002, i develop with my team (5 guys) an fantasy RPG in good old tradition.
Me, as an ultima 7 fan, pay very much attention that most of the ultima 7 important features (that make it so cool) are built in our game (complete freedom in the world, every item is editable, etc.)
We use a code-writing-free 2D-Engine.
here you can see some impressions:
the worldmap
Image
and some castle-style:

here is a screenshot of a village (night)(the manga-character style isn't the latest, we dont use them)

when the game is finished, i release it for free, i ll tell you when it's finished :)

sorry for my bad english, iam german ^_^

Sounds good; there can never be too many classic-style RPGs :-)
Good luck on the development!

Btw, on what platforms does it run?

P.S. Is it me or do two of the islands in the middle of the map look a lot like Buccaneer's Den and the Isle of the Avatar from U7? ;-)

Hey! It's Kefka, and Edgar, and... SOMEONE ELSE! :D
Well, even if you aren't using those character pictures any more, the building looks like it's from Final Fantasy too.
Hmm... a U7 - FF mix?
I agree with wjp. What more could you want in a game? ;)

Actually you've got your ff characters mixed up, from left to right its edgar, clyde (shadow from dream sequences), and it looks like the magistrate from figaro (the guy edgar leaves in charge when he leaves).

FF3 is the only game i know more about than U7

Isn't the guy in Figaro CHANCELLOR? :)
I find them very hard to see and differentiate. And it has been so long, I don't remember Shadow's dream sequence at all. :'(

Final Fantasy 3 was definately my favorite of that series, a mix of that and Ultima VII sounds like it could be a good game...

PS: wjp - I agree with you, a few islands look a bit familiar...

Ahhh, it's an RPGMaker 2000 game. The engine isn't bad, but a bit limited. RPGMaker 2000's biggest advantage is that it's -extremely- easy to make a very playable game. All scripting is done with point and click menus, so it's pretty much impossible to mess up.

To answer some other questions, RPGMaker 2000 only runs in a Windows environment, and unfortunately only in 320x240, but it can be played in a windowed mode. It uses a classic Final Fantasy/Phantasy Star style battle system that's not very impressive, seeing as how enemies have no animations whatsoever.

Another funny thing is that RPGMaker 2000 was only released in Japanese, but ripped, cracked, hacked and translated by some russian guy who calls himself Don Miguel, and then distributed by him. The translation is -far- from perfect, but it's still understandable.

I would prefer a game made with Exult Studio.....

Hopefully Morg, you can release your dialogue editor?

sorry for the delay
:)
yes, some islands in the middle of the map are the same like in ultima 7. you can see the isle of the avatar, buccaneer's den and a bigger version of Serpent's Hold. My dedication to my ever-favorite game ultima 7 :D (there are much more dedications ;) )
The Final Fantasy character are only place-holders for following new-drawn character-sets.
Hmm the gameplay isn't very similiar to FF, much more to Ultima 7, only some graphics (buildings, trees, landscape, etc.) are from these console-games, but we do our own ones, too

we are really experienced with the RPGMAKER2000 game engine and do really extreme things with it ;)
Stephan, you mentioned the default-fightsystem of the rpgmaker, of course we don't use it.
we make our own one, it's very similiar to the fighting system of JAGGED ALLIANCE 2 (realtime-turnbased mix, very playable!).
we chose the rpgmaker engine, because it's the perfect platform for our visions. if you are an crack with this programm you can do a hell lot of things with it, you can't imagine... you need months to code the stuff in an normal language like C++, we script the same stuff in only some days.
We have a lot of new ideas for gameplay and we are pretty sure to be competitionable with today's RPGs (and of course ultima 7) in gameplay, story and freedom (world-handling, interacting with items, etc.), only the graphics are not that good like ultima 7 and similiar, but i think we beat the ultima 6 one at ease ;).
Of course, our NPCs have an daily routine ;) (sometimes it's more or less routine ;) )
we want to make a game for good old RPG-classic-lovers, i think you are the perfect target-group for our game ;)
we dont want to competition with ultima 7, we want to do only some things better, but if you look very close to our world and search all dark angels you will find a lot of dedication for ultima 7 :D

sorry, have very little time in these days, at the moment our team grows and there's a lot of work... :)

but i will inform you of future advancements, if you want so!

the team:
me, as the project leader, story designer and lead scripter
3 graphic-artists
1 military specialist (for the medieval fighting skills and combat knowledge)
1 gameworld designer (we use a totally new role-playing-system)
this gameworld designer is an author of the german role-playing-system DAS SCHWARZE AUGE (the black eye, similiar to AD&D) and help's us with developing a new role playing system, new peoples, new monsters, etc.)

(i must excuse me for my bad english again, it get's even worse ;) , please correct me if i did some insults or something ;D )

Will the game be in English or German?

By the way, the DSA computer games are also available in English:
http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/gameId,5271/

I guess they didn't call it "The Black Eye" because it isn't all about fighting:

It's for script kiddies, that's why!

Well, it's not cross-platform, so it's of little interest to me. Why not look at ExultStudio and turn this off-topic thread into an on-topic one?
