Digital sounds

Post by flashingcurser<DAN> »

After installing the oggs to ./exult/data/music and the waves to ./exult/data the option to select "digital" doesnt come up as an option. It was there before I added the files. Anyone have any ideas?

Some clues:

I am using slackware 9.0 with alsa drivers--the oggs play just fine in xmms or ogg123

More clues:

If I set the config file with fmsynth or Digital as soon as I enter the game it will reset it to gm--- also if I go to the blacksmith's house I do hear the evil laugh, but that is the only sound the game makes. On the intro screen there red "X's" over the loudspeakers.

Anyone?

Oh, ya my sound card is cmedia 8738--ya I know on-board junk. I can play midi files, oggs mp3s flac etc... no problem. Just not in u7 :(

which version of Exult are you using? For digital and fm you need to download the source for 1.1.x and compile it yourself. SDL_mixer libs are needed for that as well.

In your exult.cfg I'm missing also the section:

./data

Yes I'm using the latest cvs---and the SDL_mixer is compiled and the header is in the right place, though it wasnt the first time I tried to compile (it error'ed out of the compile LOL). I have now recomiled and do have the digital option--but no sounds still. :/

If Exult got as far as the main menu it was able to find the exult data files, so the data_path stuff is ok.

Hello...

Could someone please enlighten an obvious Exult newbie?

I have the MT-32 sound pack for serpent isle. I was under the assumption that serpent isle's sound effects were all MIDI effects only and the speech was only for the intro/end. So what are these OGG files everyone is talking about? Should I load them?

Thanks..

First off, we are talking about two similar but different things here.
- Sound effects (sfx) you can only get if you download the sfx packs. The sfx in both U7 games were either Midi (best with a MT-32) or Soundblaster effects - that's why we have two of those packs.

- Music, tunes were either Midi, FM or MT-32. Exult plays the Midi and FM without you having to download anything you can just choose it in the menu (for FM you need 1.1.x snapshots). MT-32 music was recorded and saved in ogg files and need to be downloaded if you want to hear that music (again you need 1.1.x snapshots for this). The Mt-32 music sounds best (IMO)
