Trouble running the Black Gate

I'm using Windows 2000 and running Exult with the Ultima 7 that came with the Ultima Collection CD. Oddly enough, Serpents Isle runs without any problems at all. But when I goto run the Black Gate it shows me the intro and takes me to the chracter creation screen. Once I've selected my name and paperdoll image it attempts to load the game giving me a red screen and then exult closers itself.

Both the paths for the exult installation are correct. Which is obvious that isn't the mistake when it allows me to goto the intro and character creation screen. Does anyone have any suggestions or reasons why it is doing this?

some ideas: if you have a gamedat folder in c:\program files\ultima7 delete it and try again. It gets created later anyway.

If it still fails, please paste the first 30 lines of stdout.txt and stderr.txt here (both can be found in the same folder where you installed exult to)

I want to thank you so very much for your help. I deleted the folder aforementioned and it indeed works! Thank you so much! It's been years since I've played this game and it's just a joy to my mind along with the music carrying in the background that was long forgotten. Thank you once again Dominus.

no problem. the reason was probably that the contents of /gamedat were write protected since you got them off the cd...
