Help in Linux

Post by Bargeral »

I have exult running in XP, but on my Linux build no luck. It launces to a black window, and sits for a while. Sometimes I get the exult menu, and can choose BlackGate (havn't tried SI yet). Then back to black. No change after that.

I edited the exault.cfg. Removed the scaling. no change. Didn't see anything else.

May be a sound thing, I just remembered that I was past the menu and into the game once, but that was after a kernel rebuild and the sound (alsa??? or whatever) wasn't working. I re-emerged (gentoo build) the sound drivers and landed exult in my current state.

Working to ditch my MS-Junk, so I'd love to see it working in Linux-land.

Thanks!

Just curious, but have you tried any other SDL-based games? Also, do you happen to know your video's color-depth (16/24/32?). It's odd that you can sometimes see the menu. In the terminal where you've launched exult, are there any messages that could be of help?

I think I have narrowed it down to audio, but in answer to your questions....
* I am not sure what and SDL-based game is, but since I am not running any other games, I'll say, no I haven't tried any others.
* 1280-1024-24
* no messages.

As to why I think it's audio. When I edit the exult.cfg as:

no

(etc)

...it runs. Right now I am going through all the sub options trying to narrow down what sub-section seems to be the killer.

But even with everything at off, it's odd. For example: Audio:Yes, Music:no SFX:no Speach:No tried it twice. once I got a black screen for >5 min then the menu and it worked fine after that. This time black screen, still waiting....

Any ideas?

PS: On the exult menu (win or linux) what's the little speaker with an X icon mean??

PPS: on the subject of audio. What are the sound packs for? Do I need them, are the part of the standard install? Which one is best?

PS: search the FAQ for that answer :-)
PPS: related to the above. As for the other questions see the Documentation here on SFX...

Hey, thanks Dominus. I found the Document-Audio section and installed the OGG and the roland version of the SFX files. Sounds cool in my XP side.

I tried to do the same on the linux side and got squashed.

First I can't find the right directory to drop the files into as no home/xxx/.exult/data directory exists. I Did a search on jmsisfx.flx hoping to find the correct dir that way, and didn't find it. Then I looked in the exult.cfg, no section to be found in each section.

Do you know if these files can be used Linux side and how to setup?

I am hoping that using the OGG and SFX files would bypass whatever (apparent) midi problem I am having.

search your computer where your exult data files actually are, meaning search for exult.flx (for example).

Are you sure sound is configured correctly? Such problems may be caused by a wrong sound module / interrupt / dma. Does sound work in other apps? If things don't work with alsa despite correct settings, try OSS...
