Rings of Invisibility

I have noticed in SI, (no idea if this also effects BG), that if you drop a ring of invisibility on a character, it will be worn, but won't activate. You generally have to remove gauntlets or whatever, remove the ring, drop it on the floor, then pick it back up again and put it on the character. Also, in some cases the character will remain invisible after losing the ring, such as when Stephano leaves or you tell an automata to leave and it drops everything. Did the original have this problem?
