Depends
It sort of depends what you want to do... but being computer illiterate will make things a little harder for you if you want to configure things more precisely.
I'll assume you just want to play the game again.
First thing you'll need is Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle. They're NOT provided here, you need the originals, since this site is not designed to pirate the game, just to let it run on modern systems.
If you have the files, you'll want the newest 'stable' build of Exult. I suggest getting the appropriate file under the heading:
"Official - v1.1Beta3"
As you can see, there's rather a lot of files there. If you're using Windows, you should download the file labelled "Windows (95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP) Binary". That's Exult.
For detailed info on Installation, read the 'Documentation' and 'FAQ', which are provided on this site and with the program.
You can also download two Music packs and two Sound Effects packs, which you can consider 'add ons' to the game to make it sound better. Those files are all found under:
"Additional Data files (not required)"
Note that you only really want one type of Sound pack. Becuase the other one requires more configuration, I'd suggest you get "Sound pack for Black Gate" and "Sound pack for Serpent Isle" (NOT the Roland MT-32 ones).
If you'd like to get the Roland MT-32 Sound packs, you can use them instead of the ones I mentioned above. The Roland ones sound a little better, but be sure to read the instructions that come with them in order to configure them correctly. Since it's a bit more complicated and requires manually editing Exults configuration file, I don't really suggest it for the computer illiterate.
If you'd like a quick guide on it though, I'd say do the following:
- Create an "Exult" folder somewhere.
- Install "Windows (95/98/ME/NT/2000/XP) Binary" file into that folder.
- Copy the whole folders containing the "Ultima 7" and "Serpent Isle" games into the "Exult" folder
- Unzip the contents of the pair of sound packs (Black Gate and Serpent Isle) into the "Data" folder in the "Exult" folder.
- Create a "Music" folder in the "Data" folder.
- Unzip the two music files into the newly created "Music" folder.
If you now start Exult, you should be able to play the games with good sound and music.
