About Ultima III chest traps

Ok, this one has nothing to do with Exult/Ultima VII, but since I got no response at Vogons phorums I decided to try my luck here just in case. Please accept my apologies if you consider this as being heretical and/or off-topic.

I've been playing Ultima III (Ultima Collection DOS version) as of late (in fact I've just completed it) and I was wondering where the hell are those poison and gas chest traps. Not that I'd be very happy to see 'em exploding on my thief's face but I've already finished the game and I've never seen any; all traps I found on chests were either acid or bomb.

Maybe a bug like bugged chests on Ultima IV (I think it was the bomb trap the one missing there)?

It might have been something that was in an earlier version of the game, but didn't work well and was removed without the text or printed material updated.

For example in Serpent Isle the leader of the Bear Command, Caladin, says that you get to pick what clan you join, but the game doesn't actually allow this, probably due to the added conversational complexity.

In Ultima 7 you should run across trapped chests that will do things like smoke clouds (gas?), poison, curse, or even cause lightning strikes.
