Hi everyone. Iv'e run Exult before on this same laptop running Yosemite without a problem a couple of yrs ago. I updated to Big Sur and decided to reinstall Exult but I've been running into problems.
First, it's a little confusing what directory to copy unzipped game files to in the MAC. I can't do it to the root directory, so I made a directory structure as shown in the screenshot.
When I try to run Exult for MacOS, I get the following message and the laptop hangs. I need to force quit:
I've also tried removing the unzipped CD-ROM files to the application folder.... but the same problem.
I've tried to look at the GOG thread, but I'm not sure the command line instructions translate to my situation.
Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance and Happy New Year.

As per the guide you either need to edit exult.cfg or rename those folders:
Ultim7-> blackgate
Serpent-> serpentisle
Ultim7-> blackgate
Serpent-> serpentisle

Re: installing U7 from The Complete Ultima 7 on Mac with Big Sur
I believe I have everything set up as it should be and I get the same error as above (I'm on High Sierra).
Installed Exult and found the empty folders in Application Support: /Users/JJONES/Library/Application Support/Exult/
I dump everything from the ULTIMA7 folder from my CD collection into the blackgate folder:
Open the exult.cfg file and edit it thus:
Exult never recognizes the game - I get the same error as bpc. Any idea what's wrong?
Thanks!

[qote]Please be aware of the difference between /Library/... and ~/Library/...
In the root of your OS X system hard drive is the folder /Library. The folder ~/Library is a sub folder of your homefolder. If your username is foobar then the folder ~/Library is located at /Users/foobar/Library on your hard drive.[/quote]
Best put the games in the correct folder (in /Library/...) and delete your exult.cfg so nothing is kept in the wrong order.

I understand the distinction. The instructions are not clear, particularly since Exult creates the directory structure in the ~/Library/Application Support/Exult folder and not in the main /Library folder.

Re: installing U7 from The Complete Ultima 7 on Mac with Big Sur
SOLUTION: You will need to move the folder structure built by Exult upon the initial opening from the user Library/Application Support folder to the main Library/Application Support folder. From there you can add mods/patches/etc.
Re: installing U7 from The Complete Ultima 7 on Mac with Big Sur
The structure in ~/Library is there to use for savegames (user generated content) so it IS needed.
/Library is there for every user but needs to be done by an admin of the Mac, not something Exult can or should touch on its own.
The instructions try to make it clear which Library folder to use for what.
