Earth Serpent and other speaking npcs aren't showing up in S

Okay I am playing Serpent Isle with 1.1.9rc1. I have just gotten the serpent earring and something peculiar happened with the Earth Serpent. Even though he talked, and I could hear him, I could not see him. A picture of him is supposed to show up in the middle of the screen.

Now this also happened when I was in the Mountains of Freedom, and I had to release Arcadion from the ShadeBlade to defeat Lorthando. I could hear him laugh and he killed Lorthando, but his face did not show up in the middle of the screen.

Now this isnt the biggest problem in the world but it is a little frustrating because it disrupts the flow of the game. If anyone has a fix for this please say so.

BTW, I am using Windows XP, I have a Nvidea Geforce FX 5700 Ultra videocard, and a Creative Soundblaster Audigy LS soundcard.

This bug has been reported, but other people have claimed that you don't see the Earth Serpent in the original game unless you have speech turned off.

I can't remember, and don't have the patience to play far enough into the original.

I've played the original Serpent Isle many times. Even with speech on, you do see the earth serpent.


It is "The Black Gate" in which you only see the faces with speech off.

the serpents and such all show in the original... i remember the earth serpent not showing his proper colors until you get the serpent necklace, tho... and i'm pretty sure the earth serpent doesn't show until you get the serpent earrings.. till then its just voice..

Well, I have the Serpent Necklace now but the Serpent still doesn't show up. I saw in another post that someone was having similar problems but no solution was posted.

Okay in Exult the Serpent and other npcs only show up with Speech off. But in the original version of SI, they showed up no matter what.

Now I am wondering if there is something I could edit that could make Exult show the npcs like the original.

The Balance Serpent (Earth) did show up quite early in the game, even without the Earrings.

I rememebr that VERY well, because it gave me the fright of the night...

I left Monitor and suddenly the game "froze" and the shadow of a cobra was over everything... and I sadly had my speakers quite loud, so A NEW HERO HAS ENTERED THIS WORLD boomed back at me

It could be however, that this was because my game of SI was always terribly buggy, I never even manged to get to Moonshade...

The usecode script in my version (SI + SS) pretty clearly skips showing the face if the speech is successful.

this is strange, because i am pretty sure that, in bg, i had to turn to adlib in
order to see the red face, and i had not to see the serpents in si.

I'm 100% sure that the faces always appeared in SI for me even with speech on. I distinctly remember playing SI for the first time late one night with volume turned up and jumping as the Great Earth Serpent appeared on my screen and asked me if he was dreaming. Sheesh, he almost gave me a heart attack.

In my version (SI spanish version without SS) the serpent graphic appeared. I'm 100% sure too, I used to have a (now old) sound blaster pro and I can hear the voice of the serpent at the same time.

When they showed, did you have to click to make them go away? Did they fade away? And did the text show too? (It's been several years since I played the original.)

Also, did the Guardian's face appear in SI?

Perhaps they were hardcoded into the "StartSpeech" function.

Only the face showed. No text. Disappeared when the speech finished.

This looks like more of a feature than a bug. Showing the face should be fairly easy, but getting it to go away properly might be a bit tricky. It'll probably happen after the 1.2 release.

I only remember the serpents, the Guardian didn't appeared.

I agree, only speech and then faded away without need to click
