Re: help with starting game
Hmm... What do you mean you double click exult? You mean the file you downloaded, or did you manage to install it?
Also, what file did you download?
And very important, did you use a download manager? Those tend to screw up things when downloading files from sourceforge.

Downloadmanager?
Well, I downloaded the Windows XP version and then I doubleclicked on the exult file, which made it unzip. But then what do I do?
How do I know if I used a downloadmanager?
Thanks for your response.

Re: help with starting game
We do have a documenation here. I guess most of the steps should be covered in there.
http://exult.info/docs.php#Configurations
Also doubleclicking on the downloaded exe should have started an installer and not just unzip the game

Re: help with starting game
I read the documentation (thank you) but it said to have an already installed version of ultima 7.
How do I install U7?! That was my problem in the first place. I have an old CD with the complete U7 (BG, SI, FoV, etc.) but it won't let me install it.
How do I install it?

Re: help with starting game
Two things:
First I tried installing u7 and then running exult. It worked but then I got the message Could not find the data files for either BG or SI. Please exit the configuration file and restart exult.
The next time I tried to install the serpent isle and it won't let me get through exult now.
So, uh, how do I get it to install exult in the "serpent" file?

Re: help with starting game
This probably won't be helpful, as I'm making this up as I go along, but...
Exult installed to a folder on your drive. BG and SI installed to the folders 'ultima7' and 'serpent'. Take those second two folders, put them in Exult's fodler, and see what happens.

Re: help with starting game
Please see the part in the documentation on how to edit exult.cfg (ignore Bomb Bloke's advice as it won't help you much).
You have to point Exult to where you installed the U7 games (again see the documenation).
What version of U7 do you have? The diskettes version, Complete U7 version or the Ultima Collection? We can tell you more exactly what to do when we know this.

Re: help with starting game
I have the CD version of the complete Ultima 7.
I think I even did install exult where I installed BG but I'm not sure.
So, how would that make a difference?

Re: help with starting game
I tried to edit the exult.cfg file, but my computer said it didn't recognize what type it was.
It suggested DynSite, which is shareware.
Is that the right type of file or is there an easier way to get the program that recognizes exult.cfg?

Re: help with starting game
Click once on the cfg file, so it is highlighted.
Hold down your shift key, and right click on the file. The context menu will appear, but if done correctly, the new option "Open with..." should be there.
Select that, and you'll get the list of programs you can open it with. Use Notepad or Wordpad, these programs are text editors. I recommend you tick the box which says "always use this program for this type of file" (or whatever it says).
(I did a google search for DynSite, which seems to have something to do with... DNS?)
You can also run Notepad or Wordpad, then open the files much as you would any other document - you may have to tell the 'open' dialog box to display all files and folders, as opposed to just text documents.
A cfg file is typically full of text.

Re: help with starting game
I got it working!!!!!
I just want to thank all you guys for your patience and for working on this project.
Playing this game again is great. I don't think I was able to appreciate this game when I was younger (lots of text for a game). Also, I have a much faster computer.
(I hate the fellowship music, but that's my biggest complaint).
Once again, I want to thank you guys for bringing this game to life.

Music
If you hate the Fellowship music because it sounds funky, you could always go to the downloads page and grab the digital music packs (and of course, don't forget the sound packs as well), they sound GREAT.
If you hate the Fellowship music because it's about the Fellowship, I can't help you on that.
