You start SI with the black serpent. You get told by LB's letter that you found it in your last quest, which you could consider to either be U7:BG, or UW2.
I haven't found the thing in either game, dispite a huge amount of playtime in BG, and a few complete map runs of UW2.
Any one know anything about where the serpent came from?

The Goblins in the Britain Sewer in UW2. If you become friends with them then they give it to you later in the game.

Ah... I did become friends with them, but later in the game I ignored them.
