I really want to get this working, and I'm really frustrated that I can't. Two points of interest first:
1. I'm relatively new to Linux as a day-to-day operating system, so please... be gentle!
2. I have read the documentation and the FAQ, and scoured this discussion group. I have NOT found the answer to my problem.
I will probably have to add some information to this thread a little later, as I am not on the machine that is giving me problems, but here, in a nutshell, is what is happening.
a) I installed the latest binary RPM of Exult. The "executable" is in /usr/bin, and there is a /usr/share/exult directory with some flx files in it.
b) I have Ultima 7 files installed at /home/moskaum/.exult/blackgate/STATIC. I have also tried copying the STATIC files to /usr/share/exult, just to be sure.
c) I have an .exult.cfg file in /home/moskaum. I've been in this thing over and over again over the last few days. Driving me nuts, I tells ya (said the pirate).
d) When I run Exult, I get a few messages about using exultstuido, timidity, and something else (sorry!). It also says that the data directory is /usr/share/exult, while the music directory is /usr/share/exult/music. This is why I copied the files to the /usr/share/exult directory. Didn't help.
e) My .exult.config file doesn't quite match the documentation/faq versions, but I'm still confused, to a certain extent. The example shows and XML "fields", but where are they supposed to point? And then they have (within the game sections) fields. WTF???
f) The final, be-all end-all error message usually contains "SDL Parachute" info (again, I'll post more a little later), but I don't get any kind of error logs generated, so I can't help there.
If any of this rings a bell, I'd really appreciate some insight. Again, flame me if you will, but I tried a LOT of stuff, and none of it worked.

Re: Exult 1.2 on Red Hat Fedora Core 3
the path instructions in http://exult.info/docs.php#path_config are also for Linux but I'll give you some path instructions.
Each game (BG & SI) need to have their path set (if you want to play them). That's the path settings in the part. For BG on your system the entry would have to be /home/moskaum/.exult/blackgate.
is where the data needed by exult is located at (/usr/share/exult), is where you put the optional digital music files (/usr/share/exult/music).
Now why it crashes I have no idea and hope someone who actually runs linux can help you further.

Re: Exult 1.2 on Red Hat Fedora Core 3
Most likely a problem with FC1 or FC2 RPMs running on FC3. If I remember about it, I'll try to build a FC3 RPM tonight.
Re: Exult 1.2 on Red Hat Fedora Core 3
Thanks for both replies so far. I'm going to get a copy of the .exult.cfg file and post it here, if that's okay. I'll do that a little later today.
Dominus: I'm pretty sure I have the XML entries set up as you describe, but it is in Linux, so there might be some esoteric magic hand waving that I'm forgetting to do Having said that, I'll just make sure that everything is set up correctly in the file. My fear, however, is that the .exult.cfg file changes won't make a lick of difference. Stay tuned...
wjp_: I suppose that might be a possible concern in this particular case. If I was more familiar with Linux, I would simply compile the beast on my machine. It might even come to that... I'll try a few more things before I take that leap.
Thanks again for the responses... I'll be sure to let the phorum know if/when I get it working.

run exult this way (from the command line):
exult > stdout.txt 2>stderr.txt
Then post here the following files:
.exult.cfg
stdout.txt
stderr.txt
That should help in finding out your problem.
