It should work for most fixes; I know it won't work for the innkeepers reclaiming the room keys and some other that required map changes, but the Cantra fix should work.

Was the Cantra patch based off of unused coding or did they design it from scratch?

At least part of it is out of the unused coding - there is some cure related dialogue in the original SI usecode file, it's just not activated in the final game.

I think it was more a case of not turning it on in the rush to release the game. The original second half of the plot was gutted to make the release deadline, and things got missed in the rush.
Lots of pieces of the original remain in the usecode files, and some of the original plot elements have been discovered and mentioned in threads on this forum. A search should turn them up.
