Nosh,
I'm looking for French speaking dudes to try our Serpent Isle in French patch.
If you could go to our site (
http://sf.net/projects/si-french/), download the patch, install it and report the bug, that would be GREAT!
Merci de ton aide

In French:
Merci de ton aide
My guess on what it meant:
Thanks for your help
What it really was:
Thank you for your assistance
I was close enough. The main point I'm trying to make is if you have an extensive enough vocabulary in English, you should be able to read French relatively well, noticing so many words in English are derived from French. Along with that, many French words are just plain common, like merci.

For once, Skutarth, not only you made sense but I entirely agree with you.
Knowing both language myself pretty well, I am _amazed_ on how similar they are. I know a bit of Polish and a tad of German, and honestly, French-English are much more similar than any other French-X combinaison I know.

Also OT:
What I noticed about French is that there's the proper language, and then the version that everybody speaks. Back in college, I was able to read an entire math book in French (one of the Bourbaki volumes) with very little trouble, because it was written in 'proper' French. But I also have a couple French 'Peanuts' comic books, and they're almost impossible to get through. Half the words don't appear in the dictionary!

I wonder whether there is a connection with our being computer people, more open to unknown, having a desire to learn and discover.

>>English are derived from French
Actually, that's not quite correct. French is derived from Latin, while English was just greatly influenced by Latin. That's why English grammar is still quite different to French one.
>>French-English are much more similar than any other French-X combinaison I know.
Italian and Spanish are generally more similar to French, because they all belong to the same language family that is directly derived from Latin
Then again, almost all European languages can be traced back to Indo-European anyway, including Latin, Greece, and ancient German. It's fascinating how different words have evolved over time. For instance, Indo-European "kuuon" became kyon in Greece (which lead to the modern English word cynical), canis in Latin, Hund in German, and hound in English.

English is classified like Germanic language.
Spanish, Italian, Portuguesse and French (among others) are Romance languages (Latin derived).
I'm not German speaker but I find very similarities between english and german (in vocabulary, not between the structure of the sentences). I fact I can barely understand (or guess) some simple things in german with my knowing of english.

speaking english and french (and norwegian) as foreign languages and
german as a native speaker, i think french is closer to german than english,
at least concerning grammar...
while french (like german) has 'millions of millions of difficult tenses' with
unregular verbes, english is quite easy to learn for a beginner. what makes
english so hard to understand is the vocabulary. while german or french
people have 2 different words for one and the same thing, the english have
10.
i recently started to read moby dick, but after only a few pages i realized
that i have to fail, understanding just maybe half of the keywords...

I found that my English considerably improved once I began to participate in international Internet chats, newsgroups, and message boards like this one.
When I now read my old English homework books from school (they are only two years old), I am amazed at how bad my grammar and style had been
>>what makes english so hard to understand is the vocabulary. while german or french people have 2 different words for one and the same thing, the english have 10.
I think you exaggerate a bit. I've never made that observation. Any example?

As I mentioned I currently live in Aloha, OR, but I have lived in just a tad over twenty cities in my lifetime, all over the U.S. pacific northwest. Oregon, Washington, California, Colorado.... I've never stayed in one place for very long.

you should know where you are born...
maybe it's bitburg (google says there is no bipburg in germany), because
there's an american military airport and since 1985 a military base (closed
in 1994).
one of my famous beers comes from there: bitburger! (see thread 'voices'...)
