Looks nice, but I think the angle formed by the blade and the handle should be wider.

hmm.. you mean that the area where the blade joins the hilt hsould be wider then? ill see if i can make it look right :)

welll.. actually... im not so sure on that one..

im trying to go by the in-game graphics.. and if you look at them it goes rather fluidly from teh blade to the hilt... the bulge is all in the end of the blade

also, gotta remember that this thing is meant to be thrown... most likely even like a boomerang... i was trying to focus on that when i made it

OH!! Ohhh! I see what you meant! You mean the angle at which the blade leaves the handle should be wider! DOY I feel stupid... ok.. THAT I can do :P

anything you can see that needs to be touched up still? :P

I think the second one looks better, but it's a tad too much. If you could reduce the angle a bit it would be perfect I think.

anything i still need to fix? XD

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

by Gradilla Dragon
Well, I think the edge is not right. Since the axe will be spinning, the edge should not be in the concave section. It's more likely to be in the the tip and the convex section. I know how to use throwing blades and can distinguish good designs from bad ones.

oop.. spoke too soon xD

ok.. ill try flippinf the blade :)

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

and by "tip", I mean the section that divides the concave from the convex.

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

more like that then?

(sorry.. i know little about this kind of weapon XD)

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

Posted: Fri Jun 10, 2005 11:45 am
by Gradilla Dragon
Yes. That weapon will certainly pierce its target no matter at what angle it originally hits. Even if the impact is with the butt of the handle, the spinning will do some leverage to the blade and make it hit.

Now if you wish to be more faithful to the U7 graphics, you should invert that tip section. Taking into consideration the angle it's being displayed at, trimming it in almost vertically and reworking on the tip's edge should do.

On the topic of being faithful to the U7 graphics, the axes have the edge on the tip section only.

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

Posted: Fri Jun 10, 2005 12:36 pm
by Crysta the Elf
i noticed that... but the edge is also on both sides on the U7 one, isnt it?
(at least ont he tip i mean.. its more of an attached blade)

oop.. forgot a '?' in that last post.. lol

i cant move forward and make the other sprite for it till i have this one done :P

guess i should start on the cadellite helm for now..

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

Posted: Sat Jun 11, 2005 5:07 am
by Gradilla Dragon
Well, now that I checked the U7 graphics again, I think the trimming was not so vertical, but more like parallel to the handle. I think it should be done after that.

Things that you may consider doing (extracted from "gumps/Paperdoll_gump_info.cc"):

-- Love arrows (currently use Serpent Arrow graphics);
-- Bag, barrel, sealed box, box, chest, locked chest, basket and crate behind back (in backpack position);
-- Avatar costume;
-- Star bursts.

These are all marked as needing art in the aforementioned file.

by Crysta the Elf
ooo... i was going to do starbursts and forgot.. lol.. the real problem with those is that theyd look best being held in a new hand graphic.. but, like its been said before, thats tough.... id have to draw seperate graphics for each type of glove for both sexes :P

plus... how is it even thrown? tossed? like a boomerang?

and yes, the avatar costume is on my list.. just farther down cause i need a bit more practice before i do somethin that large ;p

as to the containers... i doubt those would work well... i mean the backpack has straps.. what, they supposed to use random pieces of rope to strap a crate to their back? :P

now, in their HANDS i might do.. have wanted a sprite for carrying a crate for a while

oh.. and love arrows.. ill definitely do those sometime soon... its one of those "sounds like fun" ones :p

in fact.. i might do that next.. or even before i finish the thigh one for the axe.. lol

I agree with you that the containers in the backpack are weird, but unlike SI, BG allows them to be placed there... so having paperdoll art for it would just improve overall graphic quality. That is, if anyone actually *uses* crates as backpacks...

couldnt decide which worked better... left one i drew and such.. right one is a recolored (and redrawn on the feathered end) unused arrow sprite form the SI graphics.. the pink color cycles in both

good point.. i might end up trying it.. might not :P

for the record, ive always thought that it might be a good idea to reprogram the paperdolls to work like the SI ones, at least while the SI style paperdolls are in-use in BG... they only have slight variances in slots and item restrictions after all...

should i do a feature request for it? :P

the Starburst

im suprised i could find a way around the fact that i couldnt redraw all of those hands.. i think it works well as a pseudo-shuriken

Image

yeah.. theres a hole in the middle.. needed a way to be able to string a small cord through to connect it to the belt :P

oh.. and as always, the blue cycles... what was with the U7 team and cycling colors.. lol..

It is a cheap way to have animations (cheap in the sense that it doesn't take up more memory/disk space). If I remember correctly, of the last 32 colors (the last two rows in the image I posted way above), all but the last four cycle, some in groups of four, some in groups of eight. Which remonds me... did you use any of those colors in places where the colors aren't supposed to cycle (such as the portraits)?

Re: New Paperdoll Graphics

The cycling colors (only the ones that have four color cycles) are also transparencies- I believe there is a flag you can mark on objects that will determine whether to use the psychedelic flashing colors, or a transparency.

I have a chart on The Fashionable Avatar for reference:

http://www.fortunecity.com/rivendell/xe ... vatar.html

I know that in SI, some portraits use these colors (on jewelry and the like, for example- Columna's necklace, Bucia's headband, etc)- they can turn out all miscolored because the transparency flag is set on the portraits for whatever reason.

However, sometimes they work...or at least, I swear I've seen them correctly on occasion...o_O

Crystal Elf, this all looks great :)
I've done some paperdoll graphics for..Ultima Online. But yours are much better, especially considering they're from scratch! :)

to my knowlege i didnt use any in places where they shouldnt be... i knew enough to not use those colors as there were a few small rows that cycled... i definitely want the cycling ones tho.. just in the right places...

to put it best, we dont need a repeat of the 'Spark incident' :P

we'll see if i did well enough if these make it into the game :P

Sam, you did some for UO? Did you post them on the Stratics board anywhere? :P

makes me kinda happy that bladed weapons in that position as so standardized when it comes to their sprites.. makes it easy to mimic the original style :P

done quickly, but im quite happy with it :)

finally did the Caddellite helm like I said i would

yes its jsut a heavily edited version of the sprite we have now, but I always invisioned it as being that way... just enough changes to it to make it look unique

Image

next i think im going to try to do a BG-styled magic helm to replace the SI magic helm... i see it as one of the only ways to hide Spark's misshapen head (he dont look right XD)

that or the main gauche.. lol
