As you might have read above is that we need more information like the Version of Exult you are running (in game press v) and so on (see above).
Please be more precise on what you are doing when it crashes. Post your stderr.txt (the last ten lines) that you get after a crash (in the folder where you have installed Exult to).
That should about be the 1st steps for you.

Did this happen from the start? I am also using Windows 98 to play Ultima 7 Exult, and encountered the 'continuous crash' problem in the Test of Courage on the Isle of Fire. I finished the test of Courage by saving and reloading twenty times or so. From the moment I left the Isle of Fire, Exult ran just fine.

... and if you really cannot get Exult to run stably on your machine you could of course try U7Run. See Gaseous Dragon's website (
http://members.iinet.net.au/%7Ersd/ultima7.html).

if you really cannot get Exult to run stably on your machine we'd like to know why (and fix it, too)

umm.. yep it's like he said. It just freezes up all the time in certain areas.
I'm not sure but I think it might have something to do with the "triggers" (you know, the ones that make the weather/music change) but I'm not sure.
I also don't get any error, my whole computer just completely freezes up.
it is the latest version for win98, the one you have on this website.
and yes it starts at the very begining. but It's not so bad in some areas.
this is what was in my stderr.txt:
Digital SFX's file specified: jmsisfx.flx... but file not found
No midi data in loaded.
and this is what was in my stdout.txt:

hm, please try the latest snapshot from our download page. Try the one labeled 1.0.x branch or so...
I can see nothing at a first glance.
Other things to try if it still crashes with latest snapshot:
- disable music
- disable scalers
- run at original resolution (320x200)
Try out one of those alone and play a little bit to see what happens. Please tell us how it worked for you.
