some bugs

i encountered several bugs in serpent isle, playing 1.0. please tell me if they are not known and i'll submit a saved game (they are all permanent bugs, no need to do anything fancy to cause them).

1. in moonshade, in the rangers' place, the wall directly to the north of the door to the garden is passable (like it is illusionary).

2. in several occasions (more than five, i think), stairs become inaccessible for climbing up - they look just normal, but when you try to go up them, it appears as if the lowest step is OVER the avatar and he doesn't climb on it. it is possible to use junk to produce a makeshift first step and the rest of the stairs are climbable. such are the stairs down from the kitchen in the sleeping bull.

3. in the silver seed, i accidentally double-clicked on a pillar in the main hall of the keep (the room where the keep commander wanders), and i was transferred to the test of purity (which is accessed by double-clicking a similar column in the underground city in furnace).

also, i want to ask one more thing, which is not a bug. when i thawed and ressurected gweno from the gwani death temple, and she was insane, what am i supposed to do? i know that if i just leave her there and go to monk isle she will be already there, but that doesn't seem logical, just to leave her on the death temple isle like that (how the hell does she get to monk isle? swim?). i don't remember how it was in the original, but i guess it should have been more logical that thoxa would see that gweno is insane and transport her to monk isle. i just happened to have water of discipline with me and when i used it on gweno, she talked as if she was already on monk isle ("there is a great library here" etc). i guess i might have broken something by knowing what to do and not following exactly the order of events, for example i had already completed five of the six temples (except for Logic, for which i needed the gwani horn, and i went to gweno right after i acquired it).

3. Was broken in the original.

What OS, etc are you using?

Did you compile with RedHat's gcc2.96? IIRC, we've tripped over some
bugs in it previously with exult that sound almost like your description for
1 and 2. Caused by a bug in the terniary operator from memory. It'll be in
the irc logs for #exult somewhere anyway. *grin*

compiled with gcc 2.95.3. i know 2.96 has many problems, and i'm running slackware, not rh.

one more thing i just remembered seeing:

in some dungeons, sometimes an area that should be visible (no walls at all) becomes blacked out. i think it happens in skullcrusher, at the right end of the main cavern (the one where vasculio is), when you go north towards the exit to the icy plains.

also, in some dungeons (i cannot remember exactly where), some single tiles outside of the mountain, that should be blacked out, are visible. it is like every fourth tile horizontally and vertically is visible (very obvious pattern). i'll post more information here if i happen upon such a place again.

and something even stranger: in the dungeon of the temple where mortegro is relocated by the storm (i don't remember which temple it is), while i was serpent bonded and went into the treasure room, at some exact spot, red lines outlining the map chunks appeared, as in map editing mode (cheats were off). but i guess this would be harder to reproduce.

Now, if you are not running at the 320x200 resolution, then there are lots of problems in Skullcrusher where things black out when they shouldn't. It's technically a bug in SI that isn't visible when you run at the correct resolution.

If it is occuring at 320x200, I would like to know exactly where.

it is occuring at 320x240, but the blacked areas are much nearer to the center of the screen than the extra 20 pixels on top and bottom.

You're not supposed to ressurect Gwenno yourself, you're (storyline wise) supposed to take her body back to the island to be healed. The Hourglass is for team members only (and you don't know Gwenno is part of the team yet.)

well then this IS a bug, because thoxa DID appear when i used the hourglass. does it really depend on the player not trying the hourglass?

Yes. Should you be prepared to be a nasty avatar you could use the hourglass, then ... erm ... return Gwenno to her former state, stick her in your backpack, and take her to Monk Isle yourself - to get her resurrected a second time.

this wasn't necessary - as i said above, just leaving her in the death temple and heading for monk isle alone turned out fine.

i completed the game yesternight, there didn't seem to be any inconsistencies caused by the gwenno untimely resurrection.

i just couldn't figure out where should i have learned that a sacrifice was needed for restoring the chaos serpent - the chaos hierophant didn't say anything about sacrifice, but in the scroll he gives is written that i must place the thing that will bind the chaos serpent on the remaining pedestal - no indication what this thing is. after that, when talking with xenka, i suddenly had the option to ask her about the sacrifice, but i still don't know how should the avatar have known about the sacrifice. perhaps THIS is caused by gwenno's resurrection - may be she or thoxa or somebody else on monk isle should have told me about the sacrifice when gwenno is resurrected properly, and i just missed it.
