Install Forge of Virtue mid-game

I obtained Forge of Virtue midway through a game of U7 and was disappointed to find that it was apparently not compatible with my old saves. The IDENTITY check could be overridden, but all items were missing from the Isle of Fire. I didn't find any solutions after extensive searching, so I came up with my own:
- Back up GAMEDAT directory
- Start a new game and then quit
- Copy these files from the new game's GAMEDAT to the old (backup):
identity, u7ireg43, u7ireg44, u7ireg45, u7ireg4f, u7ireg50, u7ireg51
- Remove new GAMEDAT directory and move the old one back into place
- Start exult and Journey Onward
- Save your game and you'll have a valid FoV savegame.
I successfully completed FoV using this method and haven't noticed any ill effects yet, though I can't guarantee anything. I'm also curious to know if there's a better solution.
