first check the documentation. Exult Studio needs to be able to find exult.cfg which on win32 systems means it must be in the same dir as exult.exe.

oh, by open game you go to the dir containing static and/or patch.
So if you want to "open" the BG game you need to browse to the dir you have specified in exult.cfg.
Better start Exult and start Studio from the game itself.

That's i have done but it says the same thing on and on.
Here what studio_err.txt and studio_out files says:
Studio_out.txt:
Connected to server
Broken!
Disconnected from server
Broken!
Studio_err.txt:
Error sending to server
And when i try to go to static directory it says:
shapes.vga not found in static or patch directories
Faces.vga not found in static or patch directories
the problem that they are there

let me see how it works on my WinME when I'm back home at wednesday. Could be that the port to gtk2 broke sth.

It might be that the GTK 2 file-selector works differently than before. You might have to go to the directory above the main data directory (like "si"), then single-click "si" and press "Open".

I don't understand. Could you be much more explicit how we do that.

1. I just tried it on Windows ME and it works fine there, so it should also work in Win98.
2. About how to select the correct dir:
lets say you installed Ultima 7: BG to c:\ultima7\blackgate
When you browse to that dir there should be two other dirs in there (gamedat and static). if they are it is okay and you need to forget about that again
Now when you start Studio and then go to Open game, browse to c:\ultima7\blackgate and hit open or ok (I'm at my laptop here and can't test it right now). if it still fails there is something strange going on on your side....
(remember c:\ultima7\blackgate was just an example and might be different to your installation)
for further questions someone else needs to elp, I'm afk the next twoo weeks.
