<newbie alert> map editing not saving?

I am afraid I am really rather new to all this so please excuse the ignorance. I am sure there is a simple answer to this that is going to make me kick myself from here to china...

Anywho after a long battle and much swareing I managed to get exult and exult studio to "work" I can drag and drop chunks just fine! I save my work and the screen shot registers it is all there, but as soon as I load all my hard work is gone! Now I could be very well doing it wrong. I have tried saving the map in studio but aparently I am a moron and am doing it wrong, beacuse I can never find where it saved to! lol. And when I try to load the game from just the regular exult engine most of what I have done does not stay. (the exceptions being things like chests and gauntlets)

I have read and re read the FAQ and documentation but I honestly can not figure out what on earth I am doing wrong.. And I am just dieing to make my own little world (editing the orginal ultima of course.. I am not that advanced yet! lol)

I am trying to edit Sepent isle and I am running XP pro. Any advice you might have for me would be much apreciated.

Just to check the most common things: Do you have a 'patch' directory at the same level as 'static' and 'gamedat' where Serpent Isle is installed? If so, is ExultStudio saving any files in it?
And do you have a patch section in your 'exult.cfg' file? It should look something like this:

/home/jeff/exult/si

/home/jeff/exult/si/patch

...
except your paths will be where you have SI installed on your Windows machine.

yes I do have a patch directory in the correct spot.. but no I do not have a patch section in my exult.cfg file. I figured that might be it, but I really have no idea where to add the lines into the .cfg file. I tried to copy the one in the example but I was really not sure where exactly in the file I was to put it... and I just ended up killing exult lol.

here is my .cfg file at the moment. my directorys are c:/ultima7/serpent
Exult and studio are installed in the main ultima7 file and seem to run just dandy. Anything else I am doing wrong? lol. (*coughs* I am sure there are alot of answers to that one)

Good. Don't knock yourself; the process really ought to be automatic.

ok now I am having another issue :/

When I set a NPS scedual and location how do I set it for them to work on the second floor? For some reason I can not find the z coordinates. When I try to edit them in Studio and hit apply they just auto revert to 0! *is confused*

When I try to edit it in the built in cheat menu I have no z cod. option. grrrrrr

I'm afraid that, as far as I know, U7 doesn't provide a z-coord for schedules. In other words, they have to start on ground level.

Might be a good idea for an enhancement over the original.

Definetly would be helpful :)

(how do the pikemen in SI know to sleep on the tower's second floor then?)

mmm nope. Beacuse in Monitor the guards patrol the second floor. And in fawn they also wander the second floors of many buildings. When you press F2 in serpent isle it brings up the main cheat window. Part way down it says co ordinates in hex and dec. There is the x,y and z co-ordinates on there. (z being 00 on main floor and 6 on second) Same thing for currant location of npc's. But when you are editing their sceduals in the F2 menu they only ask for x and y. In studio there is a spot for z, but like I said before, no matter how many times you change it it auto reverts after pressing apply.

I wonder if in the "old" cheat menu there is a way to set z coords. huuuuurm.

The guards in the Fawn tower are created by eggs, IIRC, instead of being permanent NPCs.
