Ultima 8 Free on Origin temporarily.

So Origin does this thing where it gives away a free game for some reason. Ultima 8 Gold Edition is now free for a while.

US only I think. But if you connect to the origin website through a us vpn it will let you get it and you'll be able to download it in the client.

Is it worth downloading this Origin launcher if I already have a disk with U8 somewhere?
What exactly defines it as the 'Gold Edition?' Just the speech pack from what I am seeing?

Well if you lose the disc, this is absolutely free. As far as I know, having the Origin Launcher doesn't hurt anything. I mean the game is just tied to your account, is all.

I think the Gold Edition has voices in it. Maybe a few bug fixes. Maybe. I hope.

Gold edition is speach pack + jumping patch applied. It's what later came on CD-ROMs. There is nothing new on in both Gog and Origin releases (except for the bundlong of the official hint book,I think)
