Low refresh rate on high end system

I am using Slack9.1 with a 120hz default monitor refresh rate. The problem is that Exult keeps scaling down to 85hz despite my best efforts. Is there an 85hz barrier or something?
Any suggestions are welcome.

Which SDL version are you using?

Also, what resolution are you running exult at?

And, are you running fullscreen or windowed? (Fullscreen I presume, since windowed shouldn't alter anything.)

If you're running it at 800x600 and attemting to use 2x scalars, you're 'really' running it at 1600x1200, and most standard monitors nowdays will still be stuck with 85hz or less at 1280x1024 (should you be trying to run it at 640x480x2).

a refresh rate that high will reduce the life of your monitor a lot.

I'm running Exult at 320x200, fullscreen, and no matter what scaling I use, it's stuck at 85hz.

That's not Exult's problem, check your XFree86 configs for the low resolutions you're using
