Just wondering... about UO modding...

Has the Exult team ever thought of doing a mod on top of UO? I beta tested and played it for the first 2 years. I loved it even tho it lacked story and plot, I just made my own stories based on other players in the game. Like raiding the choas shiring with 1 archer friend and fighting hordes of pks'. IMO, uo PVP untill they patched weapon speeds with DEX and stamina, was by far the best combat game i've ever played. On a 1on1 and massive group battles. Melee/Archers and mages were very balanced if u played them right...( maybe mages had a slight edge:) ). But hell a warrior with GM resist and a few potions could rip up any mage.

Anyways back in the day I check out a program to make your own shard, and look at all the UO art... Theres tons of it there, I was just wondering if the EXult team has ever thought of making a level editor like warcraft III's and mod UO into either a single player game or make there own shard? Well its just a thought but man would I love to play the UO versions of its first 2 years, it was by far the best game i have ever played still to this day.

There are quite some uo related project around. Id suggest you search for ultima at sourceforge. If you dont know it already, you might also want to jump over to utlima legacy (http://legacy.ultimainfo.net/info.htm). I think they did just that; take the uo content and created their own 'better & real' ultima online.

Yours,

Parc

(Once more)

(From the UO ROC, to be found on the UO.Com pages)

ROC
16) You will not attempt to play Ultima Online on any service that is not controlled or authorized by Origin Systems.

17 ) You will not create, use or provide any server emulator or other site where Ultima Online may be played, and you will not post or distribute any utilities, emulators or other software tools related to Ultima Online without the express written permission of Origin.

^---- Meaning: If you have any account on OSI's servers, you might want to concider dabbling with "pirate servers".

Ow. Talk about Origin shooting themselves in the foot with clause 17. I think you'll find that, that clause is both illegal and unenforcable in most countries (though it's possible, I suppose in the US with the DMCA...).

In general if a licence says "You can only use this if you agree not to use/posess/distribute another 3rd party product." it can't be enforced, otherwise you'd have things like "By using this product you agree never to create/install/posess/use another company's word processing software." in say, MS Office's licence agreement.

Oh, and also, one could argue that UO is trying to create and enforce a monoply with that clause, and thus trip over various anti-competiton laws.

But, IANAL, and all that.

Perhaps so, but THAY hold the ball with which *I* want to play on the shard of Drachenfels. As well as everyone else who plays OSI servers.

They warned you: You break the rule, you're out.

Well don't you play as another name on the player run shards anyway? So nobody on the OSI shard would know.
