Spanish translation, exultmsg.txt, textmsg.txt (keyring MOD)

Hi again,

it has passed a couple of years from mi last visit to Exult. Now I'm ending my Spanish translation for Keyring MOD (I had done Spanish translation for Blackgate also). But I have some questions.

I can not see correctly the lines for the ending in exultmsg.txt and textmsg.txt (from Keyring MOD). Even I do not understand how to use them. Right now I used exultmsg.txt in Exult data folder, but now it do not works.

So, where I should put them? Are they changed for Spanish version of BG+FoV+Keyring MOD? I have installed in C:\Games\Exult (exult program). I've tested exultmsg.txt and textmsg.txt in this directory but it does not work. I'm trying to test the Ending from menu option.

I can see textmsg.txt using Keyring MOD using menu option, BUT the lines, specifically 0x121 and 0x122 (and the following) are displaced.

For example, when it says the Ending (in English and orange):

0x119:Avatar! You think you have won?
0x11a:Think again! You are unable to
0x11b:leave Britannia, whereas I am free
0x11c:to enter other worlds!
0x11d:Perhaps your puny Earth shall be
0x11e:my NEXT target!
0x11f:In the months following the climactic
0x120:battle at The Black Gate, Britannia

The in yellow, in other page:

0x121:is set upon the long road to recovery
0x122:from its various plights.
0x123:
0x124:Upon your return to Britain,
0x125:Lord British decreed that
0x126:The Fellowship be outlawed
0x127:and all of the branches were
0x128:soon destroyed.
0x129:The frustration you feel at having been
0x12a:stranded in Britannia is somewhat
...

So I don't understand what is happening.

I'm using 1.5.0release

Regards,
David.

Ok, I've seen that I must put exultmsg.txt in ..\exult\blackgate\patch with the modified lines. It works for normal black gate + fov game.

But, what about textmsg.txt? How I can add this lines to Keyring MOD?

Ok, I've modded textmsg.txt in this way (for spanish lines):

======================
0x113:EL FIN DE ULTIMA VII
0x114:EL FIN DE LA BRITANNIA QUE CONOCIS...
0x115:JNo, no lo hagjis!
0x116:JMaldito sejis, Avatar!
0x117:Se destruyó la Puerta Negra.
0x118:Habéis detenido al Guardián.
# End1
0x119:JAvatar! ZCrewis que ganjis?
0x11a:JPensadlo bien! No podwis iros
0x11b:de Britannia, Jy yo soy libre de
0x11c:entrar en otros mundos! Mmm...
0x11d:JMi PRDXIMO destino serj vuestra
0x11e:querida Tierra!
0x11f:
0x120:
# End2
0x121:En los meses siguientes de la batalla
0x122:final en la Puerta Negra, Britannia
0x123:se prepara para la larga recuperación
0x124:de todas sus penurias.
0x125:
0x126:Tras volver a Britain, Lord
0x127:British decretó que la
0x128:Hermandad fuera proscrita,
0x129:y todas sus filiales fueron
0x12a:destruidas.
0x12b:
# End3
0x12c:La frustración que sentís por tener que
0x12d:quedaros en Britannia se alivia
0x12e:de algún modo por la satisfacción de
0x12f:haber resuelto los asesinatos de la
0x130:Hermandad y de haber vengado la muerte
0x131:del padre de Spark.
0x132:
0x133:
0x134:
# End4
0x135:Y aunque en este momento no sois
0x136:capaz de hacer nada por la
0x137:amenaza del Guardián, hay
0x138:un pensamiento que os corroe.
0x139:¿Qué hay de Batlin, el desalmado
0x13a:que huyó?
0x13b:
0x13c:
# End5
0x13d:Eso es otra historia...
0x13e:una que os llevará a
0x13f:la llamada
0x140:Isla de la Serpiente...
0x141:
========================================

There are some non-standard characters because I have changed original endgame.dat fonts to accept Spanish characters somehow (a bit difficult to do).

This is working for me, but I'm not sure if it is the correct method of doing this.

- exultmsg.txt is now bundled with Exult - to override it you need your own exultmsg.txt in the patch folder for an unmodded game or in the mod folder (e.g. data folder in keyring mod).
- you can use the fonts.vga of the original spanish version if you use control characters in the exultmsg.txt file. (Or you might have to use the french/German fonts.vga - the Spanish version might have been borked, can't remember right now).
I have to write something more in depth but can't now. But take a look at the file https://github.com/exult/exult/blob/mas ... msg_es.txt with an hex editor. I think I used control characters in that, too. If there is a a special character used in Spanish obviously missing in the text, you will find the control character in the hex view.
I'll get back to this in a bit.

Hi Dominus, thanks for you answer.

Let's see. I think you're exultmsg_es.txt has all the texts correct. I have the original U7BG (without FoV, obviously, it never appeared in Spain), and as I've seen, the texts are the same.

BUT, I have added the special chars like á,é,í,ó,ú,¡,¿,ñ in fonts.vga (for the game), and in the fonts inside ENDGAME.DAT (yes, the fonts of the cinematics are inside the DAT, there are 4 fonts AFAIK, although only 1 is used I think, the orange one).

As you have explained, I think my supposition on using .txt files is correct. So I have done the translation finally.
But, another issue I have is to know if the number of lines (0x151, 0x152) in textmsg.txt is correct because it is different from the lines of exultmsg.txt. I have not seen it has changed as it has passed in exultmsg.txt.

Apart, I can not see at the ending, after the texts and before the credits, the screen with the days, months, and years used to end the game. This happens in both cases, normal game and modded game.

There is also another line in English (I think in Exult.exe) that when you install from zero the game, and you say "Continue game", appears a sentence like ("You must start a game first...") or something like that. I don't know if I could translate or add this sentence in any of the .txt.

textmsg.txt lines are no longer correct as it got expanded for the other languages (French and German need much more lines than the English one, so it needed to be expanded). So you will need to adapt the txtmsg.txt accordingly (subtract 400 from the exultmsg.txt to get the correct line number in textmsg.txt).

- The counter of how long it took you to finish the game is not yet implemented but I added the lines that it is prepared once we add that.

- "You must start a new game first" is sadly hardcoded in Exult.

Special control characters:
The French and German Fonts.vga (and my patched version for a more readable fonts http://exult.info/forum/viewtopic.php?p ... 5#p1711205) adds the necessary special characters used in French, German and Spanish. But since the actual Spanish Puerta Negra was an odd job it didn't have that fonts.vga and just circumvented the special characters.

and with a good text editor you can see the usage of the control characters in the exultmsg_fr.txt as this:

In more basic text editors the control characters will not show up, not even as missing character.
Endgame.dat of the French and German version also have the patched fonts file.

About textmsg.txt, yes, I posted it (3rd post) as I have right now and it works. I made what you have explained.

About the escape characters, I did not need to use them. I used directly ascii byte chars in fonts.vga. In endgame.dat the fonts are more limited for spanish cinematics.

As I've say, if Exult do not changes the method of how it addresses fonts.vga or cinematics, I have solved the translation.

You can get it from here if you want to check something or test fonts.vga (I use the same for DOS and Exult). I have changed also another gumps, mainship, etc shapes (even for keyring mod, like the ones of the paperdolls because of the carry weight text) to make them a bit more 'well drown'.
