Oh, and here are the directories:

(Using Win 98)

All that happens is that all the boxes are gray. Also, whenever I try to open anything, it says that it can't find static or shapes.vga.

How do I get this damn thing to work, already?

Did you start exult studio from within exult? (By pressing Ctrl-Alt-M)

.....From within Exult...?! I didn't realize that map-edit mode was Exult Studio mode...

How do you edit terrain, then? I've tried it within map edit mode, and it functions no differently than in regular cheat mode... (i.e. shelves and tapestries don't stick to the walls, etc.) Or has that not been implemented yet?

Also, how do you create books (um, books as in defining their quantity)

Please look at the Exult Studio documentation for terrain mode.
How do you expect to "stick" shelves and tapestries? You have to edit their "lift".

Books: choose a book shape, choose a frame, choose quality. We don't have a table which says which quality produces each text.

Um... Okay, I just tried it, and while getting Exult Studio to run while playing BG/SI, when I click on "Map/Shape files under the files folder on the left, nothing happens. Why is this?

Hm, I can't run exult studio right now, but didn't you have to click the little triangle in front of the name to expand it?

yep, click on the triangle, not the name

Hmm... perhaps ES should start out with those expanded.

Ah, okay, I got it. How do you change the quality, though, by changing the 3 tile number things?

BTW, I can archive what each quality value contains if you want.

For the books? Sure. If you want to make a list as a text file, I could add it to our 'docs' directory.
