Hello,

First of all, my thanks for this wonderful package and great nostalgia trip. I discovered it only a few weeks ago, and finished playing through "The Black Gate" just today.
I'm running Exult 1.1 with Windows ME. My version of Ultima 7 was installed from the original 3.5" floppy.

I have just installed the "Forge of Virtue" add-on from the old 3.5 floppy, but I wonder if I'm missing something.

* The title page of Black Gate has been updated to reflect "Forge".

* I used the Map Teleport to go over to the island added for Forge, and verified it is there.


BUT, when I start a new game, I am not getting the ingame behavior I remembered when I added Forge to the original Ultima several years ago.

* There is no Earthquake right after I enter the red Moongate into Trinsic.

* Iolo does not have the conversation topic where you ask him about that tremor and he suggests talking to Lord British about it.

* I also did not see that scholar guy in the castle when I Map Teleported to the Island, nor did the conversation topic come up for Lord British when I Map Teleported to Britannia.

Am I missing some setup detail for running "Forge" with Exult? I looked in the documentation and FAQ, but could not find anything.

I just want to make sure I'm properly set up for Forge before I get to deep into a new game.

Hm, I wonder if a separate install of FoV would be different from a pre-installed BG+FoV. Could you post a list of files in the static directory after the FoV install? (Preferably with filesizes)

Sure, here's a DOS listing of the Static folder. The output is nicely formatted in a text file, but I don't know how this will come out in this posting dialogue. If you'd like me to email it to you as an attachment, let me know.

Well, the file listing came out pretty terrible. Is there a way to dump a directory listing inside of Windows Explorer?

BTW, the "list.txt" of 0 bytes is simply the text file I was redirecting the directory output to.

Nope. MS apparently decided you didn't need any way to print directory lists from inside exploder. I doubt this has miraculously been fixed in XP or the other newer ones either. If it has, then I certainly haven't heard of it.

start -> run -> cmd -> cd\games\ultima7\static (change to suit your directory) -> dir > dir.txt

You will end up with a list in a file called dir.txt, (size and date included).

The ability is there, it's just very undocumented.

actually you should use dir /B > dir.txt

in this way you don't have the size and date

But since they wanted the file sizes this last comment was useless

Interesting... there's a file called 'usecode.new' there which has the same filesize as my usecode. Try copying that over the "old" usecode file. (Don't forget to make a backup of the old one.)

wjp: THANKS! I renamed the usecode file as suggested and got my earthquake! I think we're on the right track now. Sadly I also have to leave for work now, but oh well, later...

To others: The file listing I generated was with a DOS dir command, with output redirected to a file as was suggested.

My problem was formatting it for this reply dialogue; when I cut-and-pasted the file listing into the dialogue, I lost all the tabs, so it was harder to read. I don't think there is a solution for that, it's probably just the html code for this type of box. But, it COULD be read, so that's the important thing.

Anyway, thanks again for everyone's help! Now I can go "Forging".
