Request for help with an UW2 remake

Hi, I got pointed here by Withstand the Fury Dragon, on the RPGDot forums.

I posted a request there for help with a slightly unusual UW2 remake: unusual in that it will end up being more crap and limited than the original game. I'm converting UW2 to isometric, you see.

So I posted asking if anyone had any ideas, graphics, or other stuff that might help, and they pointed me here.

Click to read my original RPGDot forum post, and the replies. I've not pasted the post here, since most people can click a link, and it is kinda lengthy.

As I stressed on the RPGDot forums, this is a gift for someone, so I'd rather it weren't talked about too publically: forums is fine, but try to keep it below the Google horizon :)

Is there anything in Exult that might be useful in this endeavour, and that I would be permitted to use it in this project?

One of the biggies is character sprites. UW2 had them displayed head-on, and they really need to be in 30-degree isometric, otherwise they'll look like they're tipped forward 30 degrees from the vertical, which just looks totally weird.

I know there was an UW2 conversion that had 3D characters in, and I was wondering if it'd be OK to use rendered isometric projections of those. With credits, of course. Or perhaps models have been done for Exult-3D?

I'd also really appreciate suggestions and advice, but I'm really not sure if this is the correct place to discuss it (if "potential reuse of some Exult elements" isn't on-topic enough, please do feel free to delete this post :).

This forum's already helped me a little, by the way: from reading the discussions here about parsing in the earlier ultimat to Exult, I see that I should probably convert everything from UW2's LZ-'77 format to an easily parsable text format (preferably an accepted standard) as an interim step, then convert to the engine I'm using. That way, the work'll be more useful to future UW2 converters.

So, thanks for that, even if there's nothing else you can give me :)

...with an UW2 remake.

Doh. Very sorry, I can't have been thinking when I typed the topic title. "Request for help :)" is totally nondescriptive. Is there any way I can edit that? Sorry again.

You can use any of our code as long as you follow the GPL. Seems like a big project.

Thank you *very* much :) Yes, it's a big project, but I'll be approaching it stepwise, map by map, so it shouldn't be too much to chew on at any one time.

Sadly, I can't use the code, since it all has to be written in DS (this is a REALLY BIG restriction, but is what I consider makes the project fun and challenging: recoding something in C/C++ is less fun, because you know it can definitely be done!

I'd be unable to use GPL'd or otherwise copyrighted code anyway, since I release all my code to the public domain.

Fair enough for stuff that can be safely isolated, though, like graphics, music, etc. And in fact, those are the kinds of things I'm after, especially sprite graphics :)

And I'm also just after advice, encouragement, discussion of legalities, and such.

about that uw2 remake you said earlier... I think it used Ultima Online models (which btw are crap :) ) So.... the models are copyrighted.
