Off topic - Monkey Island

Just a little off topic, I thought people here might also like a similar
project called ScummVM, which runs games using the SCUMM engine
(Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) which was used in several
games including the Monkey Island series and Day of the Tentacle.
It's also here on sourceforge, at

http://scummvm.sourceforge.net/

A great project, working near-perfectly except for the sound at the
moment. See the nightly builds page for binary copies of it.

The only real problem that I have with it, is that I can't play Monkey
Island 2 with it. The version that I have wasn't shipped with the
copy protection codewheel that it had when it was originally released,
it came cracked. But the copy protection is built in the SCUMM script
of the game, and not in the executable. So, the upshot of all this is
that it fully emulates the copy protection. :P If anyone has their old codewheel lying around, people could benefit from a scan or something
of it. But other than that, this project is cool as hell.

I finished Day of the Tentacle with it a few weeks back. Pretty cool :-)

Strange! I was just visiting their SourceForge site in another window. LucasArts made some of my favorite games; I hope to play Fate of Atlantis with it.

Woa, that's cool!

Does it work with Loom or Indy 3 by chance?

I have the mac version of those, wonder if the data format is the same. But since I also have the PC versions of Indy3&4, Loom, DotT, Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken and MI 1&2, I have plenty of things to try =)

It should work with Loom normally, since Loom is older (or maybe newer but not by much) than Monkey Island 1.

I LOVED that game. Thanks for the links. I visit the sdl site once in a while (www.libsdl.org) and I saw the program but I never expected it to play Monkey Island!

Thanks for the info.

No, Loom will not work, unfortunately. It doesn't use the SCUMM engine.

does it work with the later SCUMM variants like Sam & Max and Full Throttle?

I never got why they still referred to it as scumm in those games... it was rather different.

Hi everyone, by the way, I'm back from holiday.

I should precise:

1- You *must* own a copy of monkey island 2

2- This is for linux (Unix) only

3- It is based on scummvm

Loom was based on a version of SCUMM, but a differnt version.
Here is a list of what I think was the various versions of SCUMM

Maniac Mansion SCUMM Version 1.0
Zack Mac'Kraken SCUMM Version 2.0
Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade SCUMM Version 3.0
Loom SCUMM Version 3.5
The Secret of Monkey Island SCUMM Version 4.0
The Secret of Monkey Island 2, SCUMM Version 5.0?
The Day of the Tentacle SCUMM Version 6.0?
Sam N' Max Hit the Road SCUMM Version 7.0?
Full Throttle SCUMM Version ??
The Curse of Monkey Island SCUMM Version ??

I don't think that the engine used for Mokey 4(Escape from MI) is version of SCUMM. I know it was created for another game, which I have, but can't find it and don't remeber the name. The SCUMM versions up to Monkey Island 1 should be correct, but after that, they are just guesses. I have finished all the games on thius list except monkey 2(which I have, just haven't finished) and Full Throttle, which I don't have.

Full Throttle was SCUMM 7.3.?
CMI was SCUMM 8.1.0

Grim Fandango used an engine called GRIME, I reckon... a severely rewritten SCUMM or something. Then they probably rewrote the whole thing and did EMI. :)
