Halfway through the Mountains of Freedom, the game started to Abort after each save. Not a problem in itself, as Journey Onward always restores correctly. However, when I returned to Moonshade, Stefano left, and I gathered my party again, then saved. When I restarted, Stefano was back in the party, and wouldn't leave. Worse, the other party members just stood around where I'd last saved.
I've tried hacking the NPC stats, forcing Stefano out of the party, but he rejoins on each reload.

Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
I guess that your problem started while in the mountain of freedom. it is not NORMAL behaviour of Exult to crap out like this. Restore to a savegame before you entered the mountains, get the latest snapshot and play again through this portion of the game...

Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
We've heard this one before, so you're not alone. It's possible (but not certain) that it's fixed in the recent snapshots.
Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
I'm beginning to think there's some black juju going on in those Mountains.

I suspect I'm missing something about the concept behind these snapshots. When I unpacked it, there was no configure. I tried running the autogen.sh script, which complained about a "bad parser", so I sourced it through bash to get it to run. It warned about some undefined value (AM_something_SDL), and the configure script broke with something similar.

Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
If you're using linux, the preferred method to get CVS snapshots is by using cvs itself.
See http://sf.net/cvs/?group_id=2335 for instructions.
Also, make sure you properly installed the SDL-devel package (if you haven't built SDL from source)

Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
You didn't happen to be fooling with the cheats did you? The cheat system seems to make my system unstable. Does funny things, crashes, etc. If you were, try switching it off and reloading before the mountains, if you can.

Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
This problem has been reported by several people. The only bug I was able to find involved corruption of the game when you got the Black Sword. That's been fixed in the snapshots for several weeks, but I don't know if that's the cause of the problem you're reporting.
Re: SI: Stefano/ Freedom bug?
Black Sword problem sounds familiar. I release the sword to deal with the mage at the end of the mountains, and I end up with a dead mage and a fully functional black sword.
I only invoked cheat mode after the mountains to try and oust Stefano from my party, so I don't think that's the problem.
And on CVS: I may have a slight problem here: my linux box isn't hooked to the internet (could never configure it to use my modem), so I'd downloaded the snapshot via Windows (it's a dual boot machine), then copied across and unpacked it.
