I would like to thank everyone on the Exult team for building an application that allows me to play two of my favorite games ever. Also taking a look at the source code has inspired me to work on a game of my own!

That's the spirit. My >real< ulterior motive is to get more 'old-style' games like U7.

Actually, I am 100% with you on that one! I am currently learning DirectX to get a feel for game programming using an API (I wouldn't go so far as to call myself a respectable programmer-- yet!) My ultimate goal is to produce a side scrolling RPG (think Castlevania II) with Sci-Fi elements (think Metroid). While 3-D games are fun and the way or the future (or something) I miss the days of side-scrolling platform games and isometric RPGs. While genres like this in the past were limited by storage space and memory constraints these things are no longer such an issue-- this allows a much larger canvas to work with than has been available in the past. Using an older medium for conveying an idea, in my opinion, is just as acceptable as using bleeding edge technology if things are built properly.

you might want to give a try to SDL since it is a cross-platform API. Many people said also it was simplier though it didn't have all the features DirectX had. I tend to believe those feature are 3D only so you wouldn't care anyways!
