SBLive will only play music, not sound!?

I know you guys have probably heard this question over and over, but if you could just spare some time explaining this answer, you would be greatly appreciated.

Now, I am running Windows XP with the latest SBLive! Value drivers available. I have never been able to get the sound working in Ultima7 or the Serpent Isle since Exults release. When I was running Win98SE, I still had the same problem. The game plays music (poorly synthetised by my SBLive) and voices from the Guardian etc...
That is all it plays. Also when I try to change the sound setup from GM to something else, it doesn't make any difference to the music. When I launch Exult I see speaker icons that are crossed out next to the selection for each game.

Thankyou

I'm running SBLive as well. Run install.exe in the U7SI directory. Choose ""Sound Blaster"" and go with the default settings (should be 220,7). Then run Exault with the default settings.

Now if you're actually talking about sound as in voices from NPC's, will that never existed in the first place. Explosions and magic FX should work as before.

Aehm, sorry guys. Do some reading on our docs and the FAQ.
http://exult.info/docs.php#Audio
fiddling with the install exe from the original game does NOTHING for exult.
For sfx you need to download our sfx pack.

For the crappy music out of the Live! - well, 1st of you need to set the Windows mapper to use the Live! Midi and not the MS whatever Midi (system properties-> Multimedia). Then you need to set up your Live! with a better soundfont instead of the crappy default one. Use the 8MB-GM soundfont that is somewhere on your Creative install disc. Use AudioHQ from Creative to change the soundfont.

Okay, the sound is working correctly...

I got the sound working! I used those jmsfx and jmsfxsi files and it worked straight after I updated the exult.cfg. However I am at a loss as to where the soundfont files are. I'm currently using a 2mb soundfont file. You said "Use the 8MB-GM soundfont that is somewhere on your Creative install disc."

The install CD's didn't have the soundfont you were talking about. What is the exact name of this particular soundfont, and do you know where I could find it on the internet?

And one last question, what is the difference betweem say a 4mb soundfont, and an 8mb soundfont? I fear that if I never ask this question, I'll be forever wondering.

4MB

the 4 MB is okay as well but I'd strongly advice using the 8 MB one. It is called 8MBGMSFX.sf2 . It is somewhat hidden on the CD.
Let me check....

Okay not hidden at all. I found it on my Live! Platinum CD in \AUDIO\COMMON\SFBANK\

If you have the bandwidth I'd even suggest downloading the GeneralUser GS 1.35 soundfont which comes at about 14 MB. After you have that set up you will find that changing the "conversion" in Exult does matter!

To all others who read this, don't concern yourself with it unless you know that your soundcard supports soundfonts.

It would be nicer if users read the Docs and FAQ and previous forum discussions before posting here

GeneralUser, and sounds

Hi, everyone. First post, after a *long* time of lurking.

After reading this thread, I just HAD to post about it.

I went and downloaded the full 14 meg (actually, that's just the download size, the soundfont itself is approximately 26 megs) GeneralUser SoundFont yesterday. I cannot describe it well enough. It...is...*wonderful*. Simply wonderful.

If you have a sound card that supports SoundFonts (any Creative SBLive! series board, vanilla, Platinum, or Audigy, plus a few other boards), you *need* this. My music is near perfection now, and as I'm very picky about how my nostalgia sounds, I am very happy.

The ONLY sound gripe I have remaining is this -- the "CANNOT FIT" or "CANNOT GET THERE" red text that shows up when, for example, you try to put too much stuff in your backpack, or try to drop something in the water, or try to use a switch you cannot path to, should have a honking noise, rather than no noise at all. Beyond that, the sounds sound right to me (though a bit tinny for high pitched ones, but that's likely due to the differences in sound cards today rather than in 1991).

A huge bow of appreciation to all of you for Exult, for letting me know about the GeneralUser SoundFont, and for putting so much time and effort into this whole project -- only a few little wishes of mine remain before it's totally perfect.

Well done!

I know the GeneralUser GS 1.35 soundfont is very good and is sufficent enough but does anyone know if there are any better soundfonts out there for Ultima7 and Serpent Isle?

The only problem I have with the GeneralUser GS 1.35 is that sometimes there are high pitched noises when normal sounds are meant to occur. This happens very rarely and I'm happy enough with this one anyway but if anyone has a suggestion, I'm all ears.
