Strange

On Ultima 7: The Serpent Isle I run into a strange problem that when i set it to attack mode(hit the bird so it turns into a red devil arrow)my men(including the o-so virtuous avater)want to attack each other. Even when i tell them to kill an enemy when they have finished the enemy off they attack each other....WHAT SHOULD I DO?
