Google code search (slightly OT)

Post by drcode »

I just tried out Google's new search engine for "public source code": http://www.google.com/codesearch

Searching for "avatar npc" finds code in Exult, Pentagram, and pu6e-0.6.0, which looks like a map-editor for Ultima6.

pu6e is intended to be a world editor for U6 and the Worlds of Ultima games. It hasn't been updated in three years though. The site's at http://3e8.org/hacks/ultima6/
I haven't used it, though I have used the ancestral version to extract info from U6 occasionally.

As for the code search, it could get embarrassing for some people. This URL probably isn't safe for work due to profanity turned up from the Google results. http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/13/code_outrage/

People need to get over it. Some programmers know C, some know Java, some know PHP. But ALL programmers know the language of profanity. It just goes with the territory.

Regarding http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/10/13/code_outrage/

It seems some people really have a big chuck of cellulose lodged up their anal sphincter.

The author of that article makes my grandmother look like a drunken sailor on pay day in Tijuana.

Either that, or it's one of the most brilliant examples of irony I've ever read. Now I'm confused.

For myself, I decided it was irony. Only politicians are like that for real (at least up front, we all what they like to do with their assistants nowadays...)

If it's on The Register, just assume it is ironic. News with more than a hint of sarcasm is their specialty.

I'm sure the author is intending to be funny, and I think he succeeded. But, yes, I can imagine some politicians using this as another excuse to restrict internet use in libraries so we can "save the children":-)
