Ultima Underworld Remake

Just wanted to let everyone know about a sort of new (source in CVS was initially checked in 3 months ago) remake of Ultima Underworld called Underworld Adventures.
From the homepage:
"Underworld Adventures is a project to recreate Ultima Underworld 1 on modern operating systems (e.g. Win32, Linux or MacOS), using the original game files. It uses OpenGL for 3D graphics and the SDL library for platform specific tasks. It is developed as Open-Source and uses the GNU General Public License."
I have tested it out and while it is currently very limited in what the player can do, it looks VERY promising. The Introduction is pretty much perfect and they have basic inventory management in. The music and voices sound very good too. 'Treachery and Doom! My brother will unleash a great evil! Brittania is in peril!'
I noticed Willem (an Exult dev) is a member of the uwadv dev team listed as the Linux port developer.
Anyways, head on over to the page at:
http://uwadv.sourceforge.net
Hopefully the author will put up a forum like this one when he has time.

Jeff:
it seems we share the same taste for games. So far, I've got to know you like:
Monkey Island (I and II)
Loom
U7
UW
Indy 4 (?)
Dott (?)
which are all my favorites. Ever tried some oldies, like "Life and Death II" ?

No, never head of 'Life and Death'.
Also, I haven't played Indy 4, just Fate of Atlantis (Indy 3?).

Indy4 is Fate of Atlantis.
Indy3 was the grail quest. Nice game too but you can feel it's a bit old.
Life and Death II is not really an adventure game. It's a Brain Surgery Simulator.
Really cool actually.

Jeff: UwAdv is in the beginning stages but you can already walk around like in the original, the introduction scenes work with music and speech and just before the last release some inventory handling was introduced. Willem is the "official" linux porter so it should be "compilable"...

Well, most of the games mentioned here come from two of the best game companies ever (Origin and LucasArts).
They have consistently produced a long string of very high quality games: excellent plot, good gameplay, good graphics/music/etc, and are still a notch above most of what is around today.

Well, while discussing that topic:
Anybody remember Betrayal at Kronder? I always thought it was a great RPG, with a really good plot and many, many side-quests you cold solve - and an very interesting skill-system...

I just played Sam and Max for the first time a couple weeks ago (another great LucasArts adventure game), and I loved it. Of course I knew it would be of great quality. Does anyone remember "The Dig"? I thought that game was great as well. Adventure games always struck a chord with me because they managed to tell awesome stories, and they had so much interaction, and I never felt rushed.
At the moment, I've been replaying Monkey Island 1 & 2 via fellow sourceforge project ScummVM.

The Dig is the reason I'm always checking out the scummvm project!
I love it!

Hello everybody!
I can only agree with all of you: those games *are* high ranked games.
Funny you speak of Life and Death II: this doctor/surgeon simulation was quite different from all the others games. Actually, it has even been my first BIG translation: I had only been learning english (I'm French) for less than a year, and with the help of a dictionnary, I and a friend spent hours translating every single doc page: How were the MRI and scanner working, etc...
I surely still have those dozens of handwritten pages somewhere. Great moment!

Alot of people disliked Betrayal At Krondor, in my opinion it was the last best game by Sierra/Dynamix.
The graphics were alright, I once read a review of it(no not one of Elwoods') and the author said "Betrayal At Krondor was the first game with a first person 3-d perspective". I laughed my self into fits.
Anyway its great, it's got soul and spirit and magic.
I'm going to download- I mean- oh wait its freeware nevermind.
*sheepish grin*
I'm going to go download it now I think.
I never did finish it completly.

I did not like "Life and Death II" because I was working in a CT and MRI department at the time and thay got it rather messed up. For example, you could not do a CT on a patient without IV contrast, even if the patient was allergic. In reality, I would have not
used contrast in most of those studies anyway...that ruined it for me.
