I've noticed while playing Serpent Isle that NPCs (like the knight who you rescue whilst in the goblin camp and the monks on monk isle) can't go down or up stairs in underground areas. Is this normal?

Normal for the monks. Not sure about the knight you rescue; doesn't he die in the original?

As I recall, yes. Provided nothing else kills him first, he gets most of the way down the passage and then dies of his wounds.

I mentioned Monk Isle as one of the changes on the bell rings they line up to go into the cellar and disappear one by one. When I go down into the cellar no one is there. I can remember in the original some monks being in that underground workshop beneath the monetary.

Sounds like a bug. I'll have to check the original.
