Game industry (OT)

Is anyone here working in the game industry? At least a couple of us are curious as to how one might get in, perhaps with experience from other areas of software development.

If you are an artist, put together a good portfolio.
If you are a programmer, put together a good demo.
If you want to be a designer, build some levels, or create a mod. =)

Note that professional game developers work 40 hour weeks (that massive overtime thing is a bit exagerated after you factor in surf time and kibitzing), but 40 hours a week for a few months will typically outstrip the entire body of work of most amateur applicants that I have seen. In other words, don't spend a couple hours a week for a month or two putting together a "bitching portfolio." If you are serious, work at it. Work, even in the games industry, is still work. There is still a lot of drudgery. So, make your portfolio (or demo) your hobby, spend 10-20 hours a week on it. For months. I am far more impressed by someone who finishes something than someone who is talented but lazy.

I believe Exult is quite a portfolio....

My next question was going to be "Is Exult a good demo?" (Unfortunately, my experience so far is that it is not.)
