Computer generated maps

Post by sjs191 »

Hi All,

I'm wondering if anyone has ever created some high-res computer generated maps of Ultima 7 and/or Serpent Isle. I'm _not_ after images of the cloth maps that came with the game, I'm thinking more along the lines of the top image at this page:

http://www.chez.com/pulsarrtc/wizard/ul ... wizard.htm

That is, something that shows the dungeons under the mountains etc. etc.

Just a curiosity really, but if someone has done any I'd like to see them.

Thanks.
Gunnar

Exult has a map dump option. WJP has the result of it on his page:
Black Gate
Serpent Isle

Note that these are the 'low res' (3072x3072) versions :-)

The 'real' versions are 24576x24576. If you want those, you'll have to use exult's --buildmap option. (But I think it might be broken in the latest CVS snapshots. It should work in 1.0)

Strange; the link works for me. Maybe the download failed halfway through or something (it's a 10Mb file)

Hey, I've been meaning to ask: are the "cheat" maps for teleporting in Exult simply scaled-down map dumps from Exult? Also, where are these stored? I'm positive that the one for SI at least is not the one in sprites.vga.

The reason I ask is I'd like to make a similar one for my new game ... the map is already big enough that it would be handy to use the cheat map to warp to different areas with the teleport cheat, but currently hitting F3 in a custom game brings-up the SI cheat map.

Yeah, the cheat map is just that, ascaled down map dump. In the source you find these in the dirs /data/bg/BGmap.shp, data/si/SImap.shp.
In the compiled version you find them in the data dir in the files exult_bg.flx and exult_si.flx.

Jeff: did you read this? When starting a custom game don't make use of the Si/bg-data files :-)

Thanks wjp (and Gunnar), the "noroofs" versions were exactly the kind of thing I was after... and way higher-res than I was expecting!

Could someone put names on the maps??

Example map:

Wouldn't be very nice to have it with names? :>
