screen corruption under xp

Post by dag »

a few weeks ago i tried to show some valor and
installed windows xp on my system. everything
went fine until i reinstalled exult.
i therefore downloaded the newest 1.1 snapshot
and threw it onto my almost blank, refreshed
system.

but now i periodically get screen corruptions.
it seems to be independent of resolutions,
scalers or fullscreen/windowed modes. i guess
that the screen simply isn't refreshed
properly all time. i can't send a screenshot,
because if i try to take one, the screen is
immediately cleaned and okay before the image
is written to disc.

i've tried an older exult version (1.1 from
03-05-03): no difference.

additionally, everytime i switch resolutions
or scalers, the palette gets messed up until
i leave the in-game menu.

could anyone help me, please?
thanks in advance...

actual specs (with screen being messed up):
-------------------------------------------
- thunderbird 1400
- 1024 mb ram
- asus gforce 3
- video driver: v. 40.72 whql
- windows xp professional without service
pack
- no overclocking

old specs (exult running perfectly):
------------------------------------
same as above, with following exceptions:
- windows 98se
- 512 mb ram
- video driver: v. 42.01/41.09 and lots of
older versions...

Downgrade your video drivers to an older version, some people
have had screen corruption problems with the newer drivers.
Presumably because of bugs in the driver, since exult doesn't
touch the video hardware directly and works fine most driver
versions/cards.

I'm currently using 43.51 with no worries. (I havn't gotten around to installing THE latest ones yet though).

Or try the 30.82 (I think that's it), drivers.

It's not just under XP that this is happening. I'm getting a similar thing under Win98. I'm still using 41.09 since they've been working the best for me, but this 'corruption' has appeared only in the last two or three builds of Exult. However, the only time I see the problem is the rare times I'm switching between scalers or resolutions. And once I do and get out of the menu the screen is normal again.

thanx a lot for the instant help.

i forgot to mention, that this bug (which is probably not a bug in exult, but
in the *#@! nvidia drivers) can be seen in both bg and si.

the incorrect palette changes aren't as annoying as the screen corruptions,
because, as i said, they go away every time i close the menu.
but the corruptions apear every few minutes or even seconds. all i can do
is to 'paint' the screen to the state it should be with my mouse pointer. (??)

as i found out, the higher the resolution, the more frequently the screen
messes up.

so..... i'll have to try some other video driver versions.
unfortunately, for some weird reason the 40.72 drivers are the only that
can handle antialiasing with ultima ix on my system...
...but exult has a far higher priority for me.

I'd check to see if your card is overheating.... try under clocking it and see what happens.

Motherboard design puts the two hottest computer components right next to each other.

fliptw:
i don't think these issues refer to the clock speed in this case since i use
standard clocking for exult and very high clock speeds only for 3d games that
run fine with those.
and i use 5 additional case fans to decrease the system's temperature.
