realfx-bg.flx - digital sound effects pack
realfx-bg.flx - Digital sound effects replacement pack for Ultima VII - The Black Gate.
Instructions are contained in realfx-bg-readme.txt
All sound effects used a licensed under Creative Commons Sampling Plus 1.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/sampling+/1.0/ and fully referenced in the documentation, so there should be no problem distributing this.
21 out of 114 sound effects replaced so far, 93 to go!

Doors opening/closing is too soft. Couldn't hear it with BGM on. The CLACK-ing sound when moving stuff around and when closing gumps get annoying after awhile. It's too striking a sound.

I hope you don't mind me rating the sounds and giving a few comment along the way. 10 means excellent, 0 means shitty.
Sword/Two handed sword:
very fitting for the sword (8), but I think it sounds too soft for the 2H sword (5)
Cannon: (6) the sound seems to be delayed / take to long to start
pick lock success and failure: (9). Maybe just a little bit too long, but otherwise great.
pull lever, door open and close: (9)
drawbridge: (7) the sound seems to echo
lanters: (9) Great
fountain: (10) The sound I like most. Will be hard finding a better sound for this
beach: (5) The sound is not seamless and doesnt quite sound like seawaves, but its better than the torture-tune we had before
stream: (9)
swamp: (10) the swamp sounds rock
lightning storm: (8) much better than before. Though still room for improvement, I think
bird noises: (9)
place object: (4) sounds to metallic. Should be a more neutral sound, like the "open gump" sound, for example.
open gump: (6) would be better as the "place object" sound
drink, eat: (9)
All in all, most of the new sounds are very enjoyable and I would start playing with them right away.

Thanks for the feedback. I've modified some of the effects as suggested, but mostly I'm trying to get all sounds identified and replaced first.

realfx-bg has all the new effects and the old effects for those that haven't been replaced yet.
realfx-bg-testing has all the new effects but rather than use the old effects, will speak the number of the effect if it hasn't been replaced yet. If you come across one, let me know what it was and where you found it so I can replace it!

But... I think it's better say the number, and then, play the effect, because can be difficult find what effect is, if it is not directly connected with action. For ex. if birds, stream and thunder are only number, how can be differentiated?

That is better than one in the current (v0.0.3) packIf I'm not mistaken I did the following sound for "106 Lantern on" on my own with matches.
If you are interested in it, I might find a better version of it

Maybe lowering a little the volume it's better.

Good idea, but I was able to script my current setup in a couple of minutes and I have all the original sounds readily available if I need to check one.

The following tables may help with this regard; I dumped them when I was re-examining the SFX code. This is an association of the SFX # with the timbres used by the SFX, the names being those of the timbres themselves; for most of the SFX in the tables, the timbre names seem to give an exact description of what the SFX does, based on how it is used in the game and how it sounds. The SI table is "exact" in that it required no guesswork at all to make, just a straight dump; the BG table, however, uses some guesswork -- OK, lots of guesswork -- but seems to be correct nonetheless.I think it's better say the number, and then, play the effect, because can be difficult find what effect is, if it is not directly connected with action.
The numbers in parenthesis are the timbre ids in their respective timbre files (MT32SFX.DAT in BG and XMIDI.MT in SI); the first column of timbres in BG does not list timbre ids as they are identical to their corresponding SFX #. The second timbre column in BG (and their ids) is a pure guess, made by comparison with SI SFX and their timbres (including binary comparison of timbres).

This was mentioned in the last thread, but is it possible to modify the source to randomly choose from a bank of sounds for each sound event? (extra sounds could be called 10a, 10b etc)
Also, can the code be extended to add new sounds (there are many events that don't have sound)
How about adding speech for NPCs?

If you find any events that had sound in the originals but don't in Exult, we'd love to hear about it.(there are many events that don't have sound)
