UO engine

Post by Zio »

I always had this idea of making ultima 7 have more Fancy Graphics like the engine used for Ultima online, It'd be so much better if it was possible to do that... Thought a little thought

Not probable, not likely, and would be fairly difficult to do... as in, incorporating UO's gfx with u7. First off, UO is 16 bit (65536 colors) whereas U7 is 256 color VGA. Also, UO is 100% *entirely* tile-based, whereas U7, although tile based, does NOT have it's objects also tile based. Many objects in u7 occupy numerous tiles. All of uo's objects occupy single tiles, those that span more are just graphical or are multis. Also, UO is a pseudo 3d engine, meaning there is a Z check, a distance check, a pathfind check, and a height check, for ALL objects. U7 has a Z check, but only for certain objects, and no object unless manipulated by you or some other event will check it's height or whatnot.

Well, although it's not entirely impossible, it would intensely difficult. What COULD be done, I think, on a much easier scale, would be to alter existing, or add new, gfx packs, or perhaps themes. However all of those aren't really in the range of exult, not at the time, and all would be extensive.

I think.

We could do 16-bit color for new games, as the rendering is separated from the rest of Exult's code. But it wouldn't be possible for the existing games, especially when you consider how heavily they use palette animations.

U7 objects are always half-tile aligned, though the drawing can go way beyound the object's prism (like for trees).

Yeah i thought that doing that would be extreamly difficult. I just want to play ultima soo badly and Exult is the perfect fix, but for the people who were saying they want a multiplayer u7, u guys should play UO. There are sooo many free shards now and soo much to choose from. If anyone needs the installer... i'll see what i can do. I think ultima is the greatest rpg ever created... and after u9 i was disappoint and i stoped playing the offical uo shards... and now i need feed the urge to play, u7 w/ exult or a uo shard, SOMETHING, ANYTHING. If anyone knows a really good shard please tell me! thx! e-mail at rbeck3@neo.rr.com

There are some major disadvantages and reasons not to do it in the first place.

First, UO is massively bloated - T2A is 500mb, UO3D is even bigger. UO3D is bloatware and is slow as @!#$ even on high end systems. Also, it requires a lot of extra configuration to run with the majority of the player run shards, including altering your login.cfg, getting a seperate client, getting updated statics, multis, and in some cases maps. Also, on ALL systems, especially the older clients, the client is VERY unstable and is a massive memory hog and leak. Any older system (pre 233mhz/64mb) will have difficulity - Add on the that, the two most functional servers available, POL and SPHERE, are all very buggy, unstable, and prone to crashes. Also, most player run shards are massively underpopulated as well as die fairly quickly.

Playing u7 with a few friends is feasible on ancient machinery and is already using a fairly bug-free and very low-end product. It just makes sense, to me.

Besides being more feasible to play U7, UO is not on my list of things to
do, and probably wont be for a while.

There is a free UO Shard run by Ultima veterans, for precicely what you are asking for. The world is built to match U7s (the giant board near Nicodemus' house, etc..), and the story line is *fantastic*. The GMs know their stuff. The timeline is supposed to be taking place while the Avatar is on Pagan, I believe. I haven't played in a while due to finals, and such. But the addy is http://join.at/uduo and its called Ultima Legacy.
So long as you pass the entry quiz, you should be good ;) Info and stuff is on that page.

You shouldn't bother applying, however, unless you're:

1) Not a powergamer
2) Not a moronic playerkiller

And last but not least,

3) Serious about roleplaying, which is what Ultima Legacy is all about.

If you can meet those demands, then you should be good to go. :)
