Great Earth Serpent

I finished SI but never saw the Great Earth Serpent. I recall that when he spoke to you, you would see an overlay of the serpent. Do you need a specific item equipped to get this?

If I remember correctly, you only saw the image if you had speech
turned off in the game.

Do you remember what occurs instead of the serpent image if you have speech off?

No, he appeared when you had speech on or off. If you had speech OFF, you saw text instead of hearing his words (the same way that the guardian has text under his face in u7bg, however exult does this whether or not you have speech on/off). Usually the serpent would speak to you the first time you equipped the earrings, and then again after you used one of the serpent items, I forget.

Actually, the second time he'd always speak to me was when I got the Mirror of Truth from Gustacio, which I considered rather odd.

I can't help but wonder if that was a mistake and he was supposed to talk when you got the serpent ring instead.

The next speaking is in Shamino castle after picking up the medallion.

The next is in Skullcrusher (sometimes is skipped) - "The wizard, the key is a dead wizard..."

The next is again in Skullcrusher - "Seek the temple..."

The next is on Batlin's death - "Seek the horn..."

The next is when you have found the horn - "Free Gwenno..."

IIRC that is all. Then Gwenno and Karnax direct you, and then Xenka.

The Skullcrusher speech about 'The dead wizard is the key' only seemed to happen if I deliberately ignored Vasculio's coffin and its associated scroll and persisted in wandering into the east/north areas without having killed him.

Using the Serpent Necklace allows the GES to speak with you. In fact, there are
some speeches he gives only when you use this.

the guardian's speech in BG is spooky. I had the music turned off and went into the tetrahedron generator... had heard no sound for hours as I has SFX disabled. all of a sudden... DO NOT GO IN THERE AVATAR

and that laugh at the shrine of the codex. urgh.

incidentally, I was wondering something. If you get the lenses of the codex and place them at the shrine, are you actually able to view the codex like it says in the book there?

Another time he speaks is when you try to go to the Mad Mage's island without first freeing Iolo from the Red Witch. He will say "Thou hast forgotten something".

The red witch kidnaps the _randomly_ chosen companion, was Dupre for me, Iolo for you, Shamino in the walkthrough.
Dunno on the trial in Fawn - is it always Dupre or not?

What speeches specifically only appear when using the necklace? I can't recall offhand anything other than him either repeating himself if it was used at a previous speaking spot, or a generic 'hurry up' message elsewhere.

I *do* know that Silver Seed seemed to bug one of his speeches; when you exit Gorlab swamp with the necklace, he's supposed to give a "Hero from another world..." speech - but after installing Silver Seed, I found that he didn't anymore. Moving to a slightly different spot and using the necklace would get it to happen - it seems almost as if with Silver Seed I was getting put into a diffferent location (a few steps off) on exiting than I had been before.

Actually, the order for the trial goes:

Dupre
Shamino
Iolo

Depending on who is being prosecuted, the witnesses will say different things. It's funny that everyone seems to think Shamino is some kind of assassin...

Anyhow, to get a different character prosecuted other than Dupre, tell him to leave your party before speaking with Yelinda.

It Says the "They Must Die" speech but Alyssand and Jorvin (IIRC) come in say "Ask it again" and it says the "Dupre/Shamino/Iolo and companions are inocent" speech, yelinda asked why it changed its mind and Alyssand tells everyone that Voldin and Kystilla were controlling it through levers.

I meant enabled.
Also, I just ran through the later portions of SI, the Chaos and Order serpents
both pop up, even with speech enabled. Still don't know about the GES, though...

The funniest moment in Serpent Isle is during Dupre's trial, when the provisioner
(I think it is), gives his testimony while under the infulence, and starts to sing
one of Dupre's drinking songs...
"Not now, you fool!"

Yes, there are three people you can call that have good things to say about him, as I recall - Olon, Jendon, and Alyssand's father, I think.
