I've been playing Exult's: Ultima VII episode 1 & 2 both over and over again you guys in Exult team are rocks! It's a very great program that allowed me to replay one of my most favorite game again Thanks!!
But alas I'm still searching for some kind of 'exult' for Ultima VIII: Pagan??? I have Windows XP in my PC with Pentium III 333Mhz, I've tried to use Ron Windeyer's solution to play Pagan in Windows 9x but it's not working.
I'm dying to replay Pagan again, back in it's first release I only got once chance to play it; such a same... I wish some one can help me out here?
Best Regards.

...pentium 3 with 333 mhz? you don't have to underclock your system
in order to run exult... (see initial post)

Re: Ultima VIII???
um, there were no Pentium 3s that were ever clocked that low. the first ones came out at 450 i believe.

A P3 500, if forced to use a 66 MHz FSB would run at 333

a p3 500, if forced to use a 133 mhz fsb and 2.5 multiplier would run at 333
Re: Ultima VIII???
Except that all pentium 2 and above CPUs released after August of 98 were shipped with locked multipliers - internally, laser cut, making it impossible to change multipliers on intel cpus from thereafter. No P3 was ever released with an unlocked multiplier.
Re: Ultima VIII???
Wonder if you could help me...
I've got a Pentium 2 or 3 (SiSoft Sandra dissagrees with my BIOS - which is right?) at 450 MHz and in the BIOS, I cant see any over/underclocking options. Could it be the motherboard? The computer must be about 6 years old. Is there any way that I could tell whether the processor could be underclocked before investing in a new motherboard?
Thanks.

Re: Ultima VIII???
What is the speed SiSoft Sandra guesses your CPU is? And what is the speed the BIOS tells you?
Usually, software like SiSoft Sandra guesses CPU frequencies lower than the CPU actually is, because of the amount of programs running, antivirus software, etc.
If the difference is not big, then it's SiSoft Sandra's fault, and nothing is wrong.

Looks like noone has mentioned it yet...
Use DOSBox ( http://dosbox.sourceforge.net ). You can't play the intro using it (I think), but the rest of the game runs fine.
Hmm... actually, according to the site the intro works in the latest version of DOSBox. So all is good.

Heh, this thread is more than a year old. It was bumped up by some googler concerned about his CPU.

Re: Ultima VIII???
does the dosbox thing work?
also how playable is the original?
from what i can tell they havent got combat working but most of it works.
the pictures on the site are they as of current version? if so its got a bit more to go
are they going to have a cheat system like they had in U7+.5 ?
i like editing my stats to the cap so i have much less to worry about this would be great.. never managed to finish it when i got it because it seemed like stats were too fricking hard to gain and then because the add-on and then frustration with UO interfering with U8 and U9.

Watch what you type, please. Everything after "does the dosbox thing work?" does not make any sense at all.
I think the problem is in "also how playable is the original?". Don't you mean "also how playable is pentagram?"?

Re: Ultima VIII???
stats in U8 were pretty easy to gain. Just by training on the roof of the palace as far as I remember.
Yea, with the last Dosbox release u8 was playable. In CVS snapshots you also got the intro and then they broke u8 compatibility.
(dosbox is at http://dosbox.sf.net)
Pentagram is something else. Best look at http://pentagram.sf.net for more information

Ah, post nekroing, the new fine art.
What about pentagram btw, I know some guys are working on it for some years now, does it realistically look like there will be a early beta in the next, say, 12 months?

Re: Ultima VIII???
no.. i meant what i said...
is the dosbox proggie working good for u8?
i tried to get it to work but i had the same problem lots of people seem to have with it.
would rather run the pentagram thing if it works like exult with the cheater stuff.
most of the people i knew who played u8 seriously ran macro programs to gain stats. not something i particularly liked/enjoyed.
i tried the u8 for windows where the guy builds a new exe file to play u8 with and that works fine.. dosbox was hugely slow compared to the u8 for windows patch...

@Gradilla Dragon
So you think I can make a realistical guesstimation of the next major release milestone by testing a 2 years old build? I know how it looks NOW, I was trying to get a timeframe for when that will change Or if at all. Won't be the first project to die, in fact, exult is one of the few which hasn't and actually got completed.

Pentagram is not dead. I see lots of activity everyday. wjp and watt keep doing stuff and discussing things everyday. I had not noticed there are no current snapshots lately, since I am not a Windows guy. I tend to download from CVS and compile the stuff myself.
And read the pentagram FAQ at the pentagram site. The answer to your question is there. It may not be a very pleasant one, but that's what the pentagram team wants to give you for an answer.
Or you can join the IRC channel and see if they feel like giving you a better answer.

Re: Ultima VIII???
Wesley, you should read carefully what I said. Your first question (does the dosbox thing work?) makes complete sense. The rest don't. My answer to your first question is: I read it works pretty good.
Your second question: also how playable is the original?
My answer: The original? Playable how? Well, the original seems to work fine in what comes to running, jumping, climbing, etc. I did not like the combat too much. Hitting the mouse button like crazy is not my thing. The game can be played to the end, so I guess it is fully playable.
A statement from you: from what i can tell they havent got combat working but most of it works.
My comment: Wha? What are you talking about? Combat is fully working in U8. It's an ugly combat system, but I guess that's all Origin could come up with those jerks in EA pressing and hurrying the release.
Your third question: the pictures on the site are they as of current version? if so its got a bit more to go
My answer: What site? The official U8 site? I guess some are from Lost Vale, the others I don't know. What do you mean it's got a bit more to go? They are done with U8. No more work on it will come out.
Your fourth question: are they going to have a cheat system like they had in U7+.5 ?
My answer: There IS a cheat system in U8.
A statement from you: i like editing my stats to the cap so i have much less to worry about this would be great.. never managed to finish it when i got it because it seemed like stats were too fricking hard to gain and then because the add-on and then frustration with UO interfering with U8 and U9.
My comment: Fricking hard to gain? That's a very wussy comment. I beat U8 with no cheating at all, and with my stats maxed out, and I never "trained". My stats grew at a rate suitable for me to max them out near the end. Before getting the Ethereal Travel spell, I had max stats.
So, in your second question, did you really mean to say "the original" and not "pentagram"?

How playable is the original?
Not very. The movement/combat/magic system is very clunky.
You really start to see the problems when you get up to Sorcerer's Enclave.
Fire Magic is almost impossible to pull off, and incredibly frustrating to boot.
It is an OK game. It is better than most people say it is really. But it is still lacking in many ways.

thats the diff between you and i... i played u8 when it first came out and i found it hard to gain skills. that and pre-patch jumping and such was a real pita and stats determined jumping ability. havent really tried post patch and was waiting for pentagram to be finished to try.

Re: Ultima VIII???
Yeah. Pagan doesn't run all that well in dosbox. I couldn't get sound to work right in that at all, no matter what settings I tried and if you speed the thing up enough that it doesn't leave you crawling, it still slows down in some spots and doesn't play well. I had it run better on a 486DX33.
I personally wouldn't mind seeing dosbox with a 'profile' file or something with known 'good' settings for different games. Fiddling and tweaking to get it right, then having to load each game using a seperate batch file, etc., is just a pain. This is especially true when you are using something like Launchmate and don't want to have to add tweaks to a new launch button for every game you want to use it with. For some reason dosbox didn't like running from lauchmate using the "dosbox " option, it only worked with a "dosbox " method... But that is a completely different subject.

Re: Ultima VIII???
For me 0.61 release of Dosbox ran U8 with sound and Music, something that never worked on an NT-based Windows before.
I don't remember if it was the 0.61 release or a code snapshot after, but I also saw the intro working once.

Re: Ultima VIII???
I tried (and suceeded in) running U8 in DosBox with one of the latest snapshots; I altered the source slightly to add a framerate limiter (for drawing to the screen only; there was a thread on their forum explaining how to do this). With that single change, U8 was running smoothly with music and sound fx, intro and all. If I used their (experimental) dynamic core, it was perfect, with no noticeable slowdowns or sound stutter (sp?).

The launcher D-Fend has profiles for each game, but I don't know if you can set different memory/hardware settings for each one.
Re: Ultima VIII???
so how is the pentagram program going? how far along are they % wise? how much of it is playable... i havent seen any updates for a while.
