Cant get speech to work.

I'm probably doing something horribly wrong, but I can't get speech to work. I'm using default settings and have tried a few things but nothing seems to work. Speech enabled... yes.

I really want to play this game ASAP. I've had the ultima collection for several years now and man... I remember getting truly addicted to Ultima6 when I was young. It's nerdy as hell to say that it was quiet an amazing and life-changing experience.

Now I just want to play u7 in all its glory. =)

BTW I miss my moonstone from u6. I wonder what happened to that rock. haha

Just to be on the same page, speech in U7 only means that you can hear the Guardians taunting in BG and the Great Serpent in SI (and some intro/outro stuff). None of the NPCs have speech.
So can you hear the guardian in the intro? Do the sound effects work? Can you playback a mp3 file on your machine and hear the music?

The guardian is exactly what I wanted to hear but I can't.

Yes I can hear mp3s on the system and hear the music in game.

As for sound effects, that's a good question. To be honest, I'm not too sure. What is a good way to test for them? I'm almost positive that the sound effects are NOT working either.

Is there anything else I can do to test this out and help get this running?

A good way to test sfx is to light a lamp or open/close doors. Of course you need to instal the sfx packs for that to work http://exult.info/docs.php#wave_sfx

But the main question, do you hear the speech in the intro?

Nope no speech in the intro. Yes I hear sfx. I'm using the soundblaster pack. Can I maybe send a DxDiag to help diagnose it?

Tried running the game on my other computer and it crashes when it's about to load the first scene. Ugh.

On which operating systems are you running Exult?
On the one that crashes, which first scene? And please copy paste both stdout.txt and stderr.txt here.

Ok this sounds insane, but I tried running the game again today on this laptop and it worked just fine when I RUN THE GAME.

I did get a crash when attempting to hear the speech in the intro with the guardian. I hit enter a couple times to skip to the speech part... here I got a crash:

So which version of the games do you have? How did you install them? And which OS are you running them on?

Also make sure you have the latest audio drivers installed. If all else fails give this a try (even though it is supposed to be for Win95):

In order to get the intro speech to work, I had to change the sound effects to Soundblaster instead of the MT-32 in the Exult settings.
