Problem with cheats in Ubuntu

We seem to have a problem with the cheat keys that use 'alt' on the latest Ubuntu, and I'm guessing it has something to do with Unity. It seems like we're only getting events for the key getting released, but not pressed. But most of our actions look for the 'press', so the key ends up being ignored.

Isn't that something SDL should take care of? And if so there could be someone else already having found a solution. Maybe...
