Death Vortex & Death Bolt

Hi, I've been noticing that whenever I cast Death Vortex and I target whoever it never appears... Casting Death Bolt only appears/kills the target about 10% of the time... (and that's being generous)...

Hmm, I cannot reproduce this. Death Vortex appears and Death Bolt kills all the time.

Odd... I mean, I know Death Bolt can't kill Batlin and such... Ok, I just did a test... I tried to summon a DV it to kill Laurianna, and it wouldn't appear either before or after hitting her with the shade blade.. She doesn't appear to have attack animations and will talk to you as if nothing happened even after casting mass death 50 times on her... (shrugs) I know, she's supposed to be immortal... However I just tried both in LB's throne room and they both worked, even on LB... (naturally he didn't die of course) As far as DB not killing people, If someone is attacking you, (in this case Nystul; I had to cast DB on him 3 times before it would connect with and kill him... Even when he was in clear line of sight.. The odd thing... LOS doesn't appear to be necessary when NPC's aren't in attack mode.. Fickle, perhaps... But, it works... Oh well, I can live with it...

Maybe you shouldn't try with special NPCs (since random NPCs including party members) died all the time for me. And if the problem is only with special NPCs best say so

There was a bug in death vortex/energy mist code I found and fixed back in January that worked as you describe; so if you are using RC1 or an earlier snapshot, updating to the latest snapshot will fix it.

Regarding Laurianna: she is coded to always be on the avatar's side, even if she is not in the party. A side effect of this is that she is immune to party-friendly spells (such as death vortex) and will not react to friendly fire.

Aha! So that explains Laurianna...
I am using the latest snapshot though.. Mac OSX 1.5.0 Yet it still took me 3 tries with the Death Bolt to kill Nystul... The aim wasn't off, they hit him, just didn't kill him.. But, the third time's the charm I suppose...

Question; Is there any way for you to alter the program so that if you have Janna or Laurianna's spellbooks that you can use them if they are in your possession.. I am tired of my compadres telling me that since I don't own them, I can't use them... As far as I'm concerned, finders keepers.. If Laurianna can cast Mass Ressurect than as the All powerful Avatar of legend I should be able to do no less!

Death Bolts involve a contest of intelligences -- if the attacker wins, the target dies. This is controlled by usecode.

Is there any way for you to alter the program so that if you have Janna or Laurianna's spellbooks that you can use them if they are in your possession.

There is, but I won't do it: it is their spellbooks, and only they can use them -- just as they can't use yours. Double-clicking the spellbooks is the way you tell them to cast a spell (just as double-clicking Iolo's lute, Dupre's and Shamino's amulets or Julia's hammer).

It really should have shortcuts, something like ctrl+X for party member X to cast spell (1 would be the avatar normal spellbook).

Well, I can understand where you're coming from on the one hand.. After all they do belong to their respective owners..

However, removing these books off of these people is NOT something that requires the pickpocket cheat to accomplish.. Simply by virtue of the fact that they both join the party at some point gives you access to their paperdolls and their inventories... So, I grabbed their books..

Simply as a cold twist of cruel logic; the game engine allows us to relieve these people of their belongings... In my mind, if I didn't have to use the cheats in order to aquire these items; I should be able to use them.
