Exult not working under win XP. Please HELP!!!

I have the following setup:

OS: Win XP

I have downloaded the Exult software for Win XP.

Why is it that when I run the Exult software, the following occurs?

1)Exult runs and I can click on ULTIMA VII, THE BLACK GATE.
2)when I click on ULTIMA VII, THE BLACK GATE, the following error message appears:

Runtime Error!
Program:c:\ultima7\blackgate\exult.exe

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.

3)Exult will then exit and quits and nothing happens after that.

Has anyone every got exult to work for WIN XP?

Can you please give me some help please?

The Win32 developers on the Exult Team (Colourless, Kirben and Dominus) use XP, and I believe the latest versions (release and snapshots) are built under XP, so there should be no problems there.
Could you please post your exult.cfg, stderr.txt and stdout.txt so that we can take a closer look at the problem ?

Incidentally, which 'version' of XP is it? (Home or Pro or something else?)
IIRC, (although I can't find it in the forum archives) there's some problems with the 'Home' version for reasons we don't know.

That problem with the Home version may only concern users who try to run Exult Studio but we never heard back from Valiant if it's true or not.

and please tell us the other stuff we require (you see what I mean right above your post). An please post your stdout.txt and stderr.txt (copy/paste from them, they are found in the same dir as exult.exe).

I don't know. It seems like there is some memory corruption going on. We need to run that under a debugger, if you're willing to volunteer. Your best bet is to come to the #exult IRC channel on openprojects when Colourless is there.

Did you try to use the "Compatibility Option" under XP ?

I've XP and Exult run fine ... well, after i put the Compatibilty Option on "Windows 2000" !!!

Dear Krystof,

I set the "Compability Option to Windows 2000' and it is still not working, I am using XP professional. See above for what occurs. Every time Exult crash and exits, XP will complained that there is not enough virtual memory. Could this be a clue?

Dear all,

Today I tried something new. I increased the virtual memory size and run exult.exe again. This time exult did not crash with the above message.

But the following occurs:

1)Exult just runs with a black screen with nothing happening
2)the computer becomes very slow
3)after running for like 1-3 minutes, nothing occurs and Exult will just quits.

4) the following is in the stderr.txt file:

Fatal signal: Segmentation Fault (SDL Parachute Deployed)


Can anyone offer some assistance please?

Hey, make sure there are NO SPACES in the directory install paths' of both EXULT and ULTIMA VII.

This caused previous Segmentation Faults for me in the past until I troubleshooted this bug on my own.

Hmmmm... I noticed you do not have any spaces, but you have them installed in the same directory. Maybe try a re-install of both in separate folders, ie:

c:\ultima7\blackgate

c:\exult\

Could be a logic error in the code or files being overwritten causes the game to crash.

i tried reinstalling the exult into c:\exult and it did not work ... the same thing happened as above ...

(exult exited from a black screen after a few minutes )

Are you running the Floppy Disk version or the CD version of Ultima?

It's possible that you may need to install the latest Ultima patch from ORIGIN.

Also, why don't you goto the Windows Update Site and make sure that you have all of the latest drivers installed.

I do have all the latest drivers ... and I am running the cdrom version of ultima ...
